Syllabus Spring 2004
Catalog
3 Cr Hrs. Examines chemical concepts in inorganic, organic, analytical,
and physical chemistry. Lecture 3 hrs. Prerequisites: Chem 121 or 125
with a minimum grade of C, Math placement 30 or Math 131 or 144. Co-requisite:
Chem 124.
Textbook
Chemistry, 3rd Edition, by Olmsted & Williams, John Wiley &
Sons, 2002. The accompanying schedule lists the chapters that will be
covered each day. You are expected to read the material beforehand.
Attendance
You are required to attend all lectures and to arrive on time. Examinations
emphasize material covered in class.
Classroom
Etiquette
Cell phones must be turned off. If you have the sniffles, bring tissues.
Office Hours
Grote 404A, MWF 8:30 - 9:30 a.m., and by appointment. Please see me
in person. Talking with me in person is much better than phone calls
or e-mail.
Homework
An assignment will
be given in each chapter. Homework will be collected, and one problem
from each assignment will be graded. Homework is due at the beginning
of the period. Late homework will not be accepted.
If you are
absent for a legitimate reason, see me about turning in the assignment
after the deadline. Arrangements for late homework must be completed
within one week of the missed class. A zero will be assigned if the
reason is unacceptable or if more than one assignment is missed.
A folder containing
the homework answers is located in the Chemistry Library, Grote 405.
Homework comprises 20% of the course grade.
Examinations
Four examinations will be given. Exams comprise 50% of the course grade.
If you know before hand that you will have to miss an exam, see me in
advance. If you are absent for a legitimate reason, see me about taking
a make up. Arrangements for the make-up must be completed within one
week of the missed exam. Only one make-up exam will be allowed. A zero
will be assigned if the reason is unacceptable or if more than one exam
is missed.
Laboratory
Unless you have already completed Chem 124, you must register for this
laboratory, which is a co-requisite to Chem 122 lecture.
Final Exam
The final examination will be comprehensive, covering all the material
we studied this semester. Your score on this exam will comprise 25%
of your course grade.
Grades
Your course grade is based on the following: homework 25%, hour exams
50%, final exam 25%.

scale is the following:
A 90.0 - 100.0
B 80.0 - 89.9
C 70.0 - 79.9
D 60.0 - 69.9
F < 60.0
