Abstract

Activities will focus on understanding of place value for larger whole numbers and decimals, models for understanding multiplication and division, models for representing fractions, and models for addition and subtraction of fractions. Concrete materials will be used to represent concepts. For example, fraction circles will be used to compare fractions, and dot arrays will be used to explore multiplication and the distributive property. Other hands-on approaches will be presented, including the use of work mats, number lines, and games with spinners. Relevant Internet sites will be explored. The project is aligned with national and state curriculum standards, and college readiness standards (ACT).

Through the maintenance of an online community in Blackboard, throughout the academic year, we will create a learning, working, and community environment for two-way communication between project personnel and project participants. A minimum of one new resource will be posted each week for trial and discussion. Resources will include publicly-available Web sites for mathematics content and pedagogy, lesson plans, journal articles, and Java applets. This will provide timely access to resources and foster dialogue to provide a meaningful educational experience for participants.
