Literature Connection Web Quest

Teacher Preparation Academy - Dr. Deborah A. McAllister

The College of Health, Education, and Professional Studies

The following list contains links to Literature Connection Web Quests, children's literature bookmarks, national and state standards, project directions and performance indicators for preservice teachers, a list of related conference presentations attended, and web page references. This page was created for Educ 414 at UTC and conference workshops at the Tennessee Education Technology Conference (TETC), Nashville, TN, November 30, 1999, November 30, 2000, November 1, 2001, and December 5, 2002 (using only the Bookmarks in 2001 and 2002) by Deborah McAllister, Ginger Sullivan, Shirley McDonald, and Peggy Moyer.

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which some or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the Internet. The learner will grapple with this significant amount of new information, analyze it and transform it into a useful product. (B. Dodge, cited in Siwinski, 1997). See Creating Integrated Lessons and Technology Integration Upper Elementary.

Educ 414 Project Directions

The literature connection web quest will involve the selection of a children's literature book that contains mathematics, and has the purpose of teaching mathematics or using mathematics correctly. The mathematics contained in the book should demonstrate one of the NCTM standards at a level under study, PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8 9-12 (Exceptional Learners). State the standard (including name, number, grade band, goal, and expectation) and grade that are being considered in the book. Your document should include a title such as 'Literature Connection Web Quest for [name of book].' Summarize the book's story and mathematical content. Include the web site name and web address (label as below) for relevant sites that could be visited when reading that book. Literature connection web quests will be displayed on the Internet and/or at a professional meeting. All references to books are to be written in APA style. Proofread, spellcheck, and verify web addresses. Disk and paper copy.
