Welcome to the world of volcanoes. Volcanoes are an important factor in the development of Earth. They have destroyed much land yet also created much. Examples of this can be found in many places. Now it is time for you to find these examples.
You are going to research volcanoes. From this information, you are going to create a PowerPoint presentation. Also, you are going to present your PowerPoint project to the class. This is an individual assignment. The standard we will be completing is as follows: NS.5-8.4 Earth and Space Science; As a result of their activities in grades 5-8, all students should develop an understanding - structure of the earth system.
Here are two sources that you made find useful.
http://www.volcanoes.com/ This website has a lot of information located on it. This will give you information about volcanoes around the world and also in the United States.
http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/ This website will give you information about volcanoes in the United States. This website has a lot of information about the Cascade Mountains in Washington State.

Your assignment is comprised of two parts. The first part is your research.
Research:
- You must first choose a volcano to research. You may choose any volcano in the world but it would be in your best interest to choose a volcano that has an interesting past.
- After you have chosen your volcano, you are going to answer the following questions. These questions will help you in preparing your PowerPoint presentation.
1. What is the name of the volcano?
2. Where is the volcano located? Please be as detailed as possible.
3. What is the eruption history of your volcano? Please give as much detail as possible. Including the type of eruption(s) and timeline.
4. Why did you choose this volcano to research?
5. What type of volcano is it?
6. Is there a legend associated with your volcano?
7. Can you visit your volcano? Would you like to visit your volcano? Why or why not?
8. What is the one most interesting fact that you have found out about your volcano?
9. Where did you find your information? Please site the sources in APA style. If you need help, please let the teacher know.
When you have completed your research, you will need to turn in the information in to your teacher. The teacher will look over the information and return it to you. When the research has been returned to you, please complete the following directions for building a PowerPoint presentation. All components of the presentation must be included.
PowerPoint:
1 - Title Slide - This slide must include your name, the date, the name of the volcano, and a graphic. The graphic must be related to your presentation.
2 - Information Slide - This slide is to include the location of the volcano.
3 - Date Slide - This slide is to include the history of your volcano. This slide should only include the most relevant points. Do not overload your slide with a lot of information. Just give highlights on the slide.
4 - Misc. Slide - This slide is to include any information that you found especially interesting. This may include legends or predictions of another eruption.
5 - Reference Slide - This slide is to include all the websites where you retrieved your information. Please make sure that these are written in APA style.
Reflection
The purpose of the product is to help students to learn more about the history of the Earth. Also, the project will help students incorporate technology by adding a PowerPoint presentation and having sources available for the students to use, which are available online. The product will also help with the students' research abilities.
Preceding events will have included discussing the various kinds of volcanoes and also different volcanoes around the world. Also, the students will have participated in a class discussion about the effects of volcanoes on the Earth. The class would have spent 2 weeks discussing volcanoes.
Ensuing Events will include students presenting their PowerPoint presentations. Also, the students will be involved in the making a model of an eruption of a volcano. This will be the ending assignment and will be completed on a Friday. The students will also have a "Volcano Party" on that Friday. The party will be during the last 30 minutes of class and will involve students' work being on display and students participating in refreshments.
Congratulations!! You have done a great job and I am so proud of you. The following is a rubric that you need to complete and hand back to me. I want you to complete this rubric for your project. Also, I will have a rubric for you to complete for each of the presentations. Be honest when you evaluate yourself and others.
