Java Applets and Curriculum Standards
ACTM 2004, TETC 2004

Dr. Deborah A. McAllister - Teacher Preparation Academy

Shirley A. McDonald - Ringgold Middle School

Description of Session

Through mathematical modeling in a technology-rich, dynamic, and visual environment, participants will make connections between online mathematics activities and curriculum standards. Internet sites containing Java applets will be utilized to simulate events, such as tossing a coin, working with pattern blocks, etc.

What is a Java applet? - A short program written in Java that is attached to a world wide web page and executed by a web browser. - http://www.atlantawebhost.com/glossary-hl.php

What is Shockwave? - A technology that enables web pages to include multimedia objects such as audio, animation, and video; you use an authoring tool by Macromedia called "Director" to create a shockwave object and a program called "Afterburner" to compress the object. A plug-in available from Macromedia's web site is required to see a Shockwave object included on a web page. - http://www.oit.ohio-state.edu/glossary/gloss4.html
