Add audio to your Web site - you can store, share, and embed audio files through Houndbite.

Add a Gadget to your site - You can add gadgets, like calendars, driving directions and more, to your Web site using Google's gadgets. Just select the gadget you'd like to add and set your preferences. Then copy the code provided by Google and insert it into the html code of your Web page.

Add a Blog - Blogger, owned by Google, offers a free blogging service. Blogger will manage your blog for you - publishing new posts and archiving old posts. You can have Blogger host your blog, or you can publish the blog to the UTC server and incorporate it into your own Web site.

To have Blogger publish the blog to the UTC server enter the following info in Settings - Publishing:

  • FTP Server: oneftp.utc.edu
  • Blog URL: www.utc.edu/Your Name and location of blog (example: www.utc.edu/Charlene-Simmons/)
  • FTP Path: /uservol/users/UTCid/public_html/ In place of UTCid enter the letters and numbers that form your UTC id.
  • Blog file name: you can name it anything, like blog.html
  • FTP username: your UTC id (the letter & number version)
  • FTP password: your password
  • By entering this information Blogger will publish the blog to your UTC Web space.

Add a message board - Want to add a message board to your Web site? The easiest thing to do is to set up a message board on a message board service and create a link to the message board from your Web site. There are a number of Web sites offering free message board services. Check out this list of free services.

Web site accessibility - The World Wide Web Consortium has set the standard for Web site accessibility. Learn more about the W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative.

Make you Web site accessible to all - The Trace Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides a comprehensive list of links to Web sites about Web Accessibility.

Creating Web Pages - Don't have access to Go Live? That's ok, you can still create Web pages. Remember, you can create a Web page by writing your own html code and using a simple text program like TextEditor or Notepad. If you want a program that will write the HTML for you there are a number of choices. You can pay for a program like Dreamweaver (the industry standard), Adobe GoLive (what we used in class), Microsoft's Frontpage, and others. You can also download free, open source programs like VNU.

VNU Web Publisher - Looking for a free Web publishing program? VNU is an open source program that has many of the same features as GoLive. The button may be different, but remember the basic tenants of the Web design are still the same.

Getting a Web Address - Want your own Web address? You'll need to register a URL. A number of companies and Web sites offer this service including Register.com and GoDaddy.com

Web Hosting - Right now your Web site is stored on the UTC Web server. When you graduate you will need to move your Web site to another Web server. There's a good chance that your ISP at your house (like Bell South or Comcast) already provides you with space on there servers for free. If you have an Internet connection at home you should check with the company and see if you can upload your site for free. If you do not have an ISP at home you will need to find another Web server to store your site on. To find one do a Web search for "Web hosting."
