TITLE: Fundamental Concepts in Analysis

 

CREDIT: 3 Semester hours.

PREREQUISITES: 245, 255, and 300 with a minimum grade of ``C" or consent of instructor.

 

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Classical treatment of the basic concepts of calculus: limits, continuity, differentiation, Riemann integration, sequences and series of numbers and functions.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY: It is your obligation to be on time for each class.

 

MAKE--UP POLICY: Tests will be made--up only in EXTREME cases as determined by the instructor.

 

HOMEWORK: Students in this class are responsible for knowing how to solve every homework problem, being able to reproduce every example in the textbook and in the lectures, and having a precise understanding of what is going on at any moment of a lecture. $\bf Success$ in this course will require that you solve problems on every day of the semester.

 

LEARNING THE MATERIAL: The best strategy is to learn the material from the very first time that we cover in the class.

 

EVALUATION: There will be some home assignments ($10\%$ of the course grade), 3 in--class tests ($50\%$), some randomly given quizzes ($10\%,$ you should be always prepared!), and the cumulative final exam ($30\%$.) As you may see, the  Total  = $100\%.$   

 

Final exam: Friday, December 5, 8:00--10:00 a.m.

 

Grading scale: $90-100,\> A; \; 80-89,\> B; \; 70-79,\> C; \; 60-69,\> D$

 

TEXTBOOK: {\it Analysis with an Introduction to Proof, by Steven R. Lay, 3d edition. I hope to cover Chapters 3-9, but probably not all sections.

August 18 (Monday) Classes begin

   

August 22 (Friday) Last day to register in day or evening classes, to add a subject, or to change section

  

August 25 – 29 (Monday-Friday) Addition of classes with departmental approval only, no new registrations

  

August 29 (Friday) Last day to drop a class before a W (withdrawal) is recorded and to change from credit to audit

  

September 1 (Monday) Labor Day holiday

  

October 6 - 10 (Monday-Friday) Faculty notify undergraduate students of mid-term grades

  

October 15 (Wednesday) Last day for official withdrawal from any class with a W

  

October 17-21 Fall Break — No Classes

 

November 7 (Friday) Last day for removing spring or summer semester incomplete grades

  

November 27-28 Thanksgiving Holiday

  

December 1 (Monday) Last day of classes for fall semester

  

December 2 (Tuesday) Reading Day

  

December 5 (Friday) Final Examination
