Course Requirements

Attendance Policy
Attendance will be taken at each session. Poor attendance will become a negative factor in the event of a borderline grade at the end of the course. Furthermore, students will be held responsible on all exams for materials presented in lectures not covered in the readings.

Students with a disability requiring special assistance should notify the instructor for the necessary arrangements and/ore contact The Office for Students with Disabilities/ College Access Program in 110 Frist Hall (Tel: 755-4006).

How to Do Well In the Course

As is appropriate in a college-level course, the reading for Political Science 101 will make substantial demands on your time. It will be important to keep up with this reading, to read specific assignments before they are discussed in class, and to take notes on the reading to aid your analysis of the points covered. You should count on spending a minimum of 8 hours per week on the assigned readings. Unless you are planning to attach a high priority to this course, you will find the examinations difficult and the results frustrating. Not all of the reading will be discussed in class, so your independent study and analysis of the course materials will therefore be critical to your success.

Since lecture material presented in class will supplement the reading rather than just repeat our various texts in different words, a premium will also be placed on your ability to take notes. The lecture situation should not by any means be a passive experience. To do well, you will need to compile a good set of lecture notes. In addition, it will be important to learn the material as you go along rather than relying on a "crash" period of study the day before a test. Read and study your notes as soon after class as possible while they are still fresh in your mind.

Progress Report

The results of the first examination will be communicated to all students prior to the drop date for the semester in order to enable students to make informed decisions should they wish to consider dropping the course.

Make-Up Examination Policy

Make-up examinations will be given only to students presenting valid and authenticated reasons for missing an examination. In addition, notification of absence must be communicated to the instructor prior to the scheduled examination.
