The Lure of Lookout Mountain

Standing on its summit, the visitor drinks a bracing air; his eye wanders over a vast sea of forest and cultivated fields, until its vision is bounded by the mountains fifty miles distant. The Tennessee River meanders on graceful curves beneath its feet -- now lost to view, then the glimmer of its waters breaks out again in the far distance. Awful precipices and mighty rocks are all around. . . . . . .

Lookout Mountain, A Place And Its People, edited by Norman and Frances Bradley

Lookout Mountain has the unique distinction of rising up from the surrounding valley in three states: Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. The mountain is part of the Cumberland Plateau and extends 83 miles with the major portion of it in Georgia. This section varies in height ranging from 1,300 to 2,200 feet. It is located in the extreme northwest corner of Georgia in Walker and Dade counties.
