Creating Online Surveys

UTC provides several ways for faculty and staff to create online surveys.  The best one for your application will depend on exactly what you want to get out of the survey process and how much time you are wiling to spend learning a particular system.  Please note that each solution comes with its own set of pro's and con's.  Please take this into account when choosing a particular solution.  if you would like to discuss which of these packages may work best your situation and needs, please contact Charles Hart at the Walker Teaching Resource Center

Blackboard Survey Module:  This is the simplest method of creating a survey.  It leverages skills faculty have already developed creating tests within blackboard as well as the ease of use for students to complete the survey. Click here to register for Blackboard training classes.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Lots of support provided
  • Questions can be mass uploaded into Blackboard using Respondus.

Cons

  • questions can only be moderately complex.  Cannot use questions such as "pick three of the following ten choices" unless they are restructured such as "rank the following ten choices"
  • Surveys are only available to people with a blackboard account.  these users must be grouped together into either a class or an organization before they can access the survey.
  • Descriptive statistics only.  But data can be exported and manipulated with other programs.

WWW.Speedsurvey.com:  This is an extremely easy program for creating an online survey.  You login using a University account and follow the simple steps to create a survey. It also provides descriptive statistics in a variety of presentations including charts and graphs.  It will even automatically create a powerpoint of the data for you.

Pros:

  • Very user friendly interface
  • Good technical support available on campus
  • Rich presentation of data choices . Data can be exported in a variety of native formats.(excel, access, etc)
  • surveys are available to anyone across the web
  • Can be easily branded with University Logo

Cons:

  • Only moderately complex questions can be used. the program cannot display questions such as "pick three of the following ten choices" nor can you create routed questions.
  • Descriptive statistics, charts and graphs only.  But data can be exported and manipulated with other programs.

Snap survey software:  This is a professional survey package that can probably create any type of survey that you can think of.  It also has its own built-in statistical package so that complex statistical derivatives can be programmed. It is difficult to create a survey, difficult to format the survey and difficult to get the results into the survey.  If you have time to learn a high-end survey software package and its statistical programming language, this survey program is possibly capable of creating any type of survey you could want.

Pros:

  • Will create any type of survey.
  • Will collect and process the results any way you program it to

Cons:

  • User interface is proprietary and very unfriendly
  • You must know its programming language to create sophisticated questions
  • No user support on campus.  If you choose this program you will become the campus resource for it.  The program came with about 6 manuals weighing about 20lbs and you will need to read them to use it successfully.
  • Help from the company is a pay service.
