In today's world, the university is charged with keeping private data private. Not only does this include the faculty and staff who work at the university, but also the educational, financial, and medical records of the students that attend the university. It is no longer just a situation of locking up the information in a filing cabinet. You now have to secure the electronic versions of this data. Here are some ways.

Tips for maintaining safe computing habits
Don't let unauthorized people access your computer. You don't let anyone have the key to the locked filing cabinet do you? why would you give them access to the same information on your computer?
Don't let someone put spyware on your computer. Not only does this mean not letting people sit down at your computer and install a program, it also means not going to web sites that contain malicious code that secretly installs spy programs on your computer. It means not opening emails with attachments form people you do not know. If your computer has primary access to protected information you really should use a different computer to surf the web or check email.
Don't carry private information around with you unless it is protected somehow. Some ways to protect it include encrypting your jump drive, encrypting the file, putting files in a zip file and assigning a password to it.
