Caution Urged as Street Conversion
Completed
Get ready for new two-way traffic on the streets surrounding the UTC
campus!
Beginning December 20, MLK Boulevard, McCallie Avenue, Bailey
Avenue and portions of Georgia Avenue will be open to two-way traffic.
Drivers are urged to use caution during this conversion process. Chattanooga
Police will be increasing their patrols on these roads during the conversion
to enforce traffic laws and ensure motorist and pedestrian safety.
Until December 20, construction drums will be installed blocking the
left lanes on these streets. During this phase the contractor will begin
the adjustment of traffic signals and the installation of signs and markings
to accommodate the two-way traffic flow. These lane closures will remain
in effect until Saturday, December 20. Access to businesses and residences
on the both sides of these roads will be allowed at all times during
the conversion.
On December 20 the barrels will be removed from the left-hand lanes and
these streets will be opened for two-way traffic. Some markers or barrels
will remain on the centerline of these roads for a few weeks to remind
motorists of the change to two-way travel.
The City Traffic Engineer will closely monitor these roads to make necessary
adjustments to signal timing to ensure optimal traffic flow.
