Regina Shoulders, senior communications officer with the UTC police department,
recently moved into a pretty new home on Flynn Street, not far from Central
Avenue. She is the first person to reap the benefits of the Universitys
Live Where You Work UTC/MLK Housing Incentive Program, which
allows full-time faculty and staff up to $15,000 in incentives for moving
into the M.L. King neighborhood.
I am loving my house. I think this is a very good program, because
people who work for the University can live closer to work and own a home,
Shoulders said.
Live Where You Workcontributes $5,000 for a down payment,
closing costs, paint or repairs. Also, $2,000 per year for five years
is available to continue home improvements, to use toward tax assistance
and more. A five-year commitment from the employee is required to live
within the M.L. King neighborhood.
My neighbors are very friendly, and the neighborhood is very quiet,
Shoulders said.
The M.L. King Neighborhood Housing Initiative Program is the collaborative
work of UTC, the M.L. King Neighborhood Association and the Lyndhurst
Foundation. The rebuilding and renovation of the houses in the Live
Where You Work program is done by Inner City Development Corporation,
a private, nonprofit group established to stimulate revitalization of
the M.L. King neighborhood.
The program also works in cooperation with the Community Impact Fund and
the UTC Community Outreach Partnership Center.
