French Perspective Offered on Women in Politics

Yvette Roudy, the dean of political women in France and close associate of former French President Francois Mitterand, will participate in an event on the UTC campus and it is open to the entire community. Roudy will lead a roundtable discussion (in English) addressing "Women and Politics in France & the United States" on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Fletcher Hall 100. Dr. Stephanie Bellar of the UTC Political Science Department and civic leader Mai Bell Hurley will offer responses to the discussion.

"We are fortunate to welcome to our campus Madame Yvette Roudy ," said Dr. Felicia Sturtzer, foreign language professor at UTC.

Roudy served as Minister for Women's Rights in Mitterand's cabinet, as a Deputy in the European Parliament and the French National Assembly, and Mayor of the city of Lisieux (Normandy). She founded the Assembly of Women and the European Institute for Women and Politics. As Council President of Europe's Commission on Equality for Women and Men, her knowledge of the relationship between politics and people's lives helped extend her work to forty countries.

Not only has Roudy written five books, she has also translated into French Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique and Eleanor Roosevelt's My Life.

Her visit is sponsored by Speakers and Special Events, the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures, the Women's Studies program and the Political Science Department.
