This week, you will have three opportunities to hear beautiful music
on the UTC campus. Each of the performances is free and open to the public.
Spend an afternoon listening to the final concert of the UTC Symphony
Orchestras 2002-03 season on Sunday, April 14, at 3 p.m.,
in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall. Antonin Dvorak's "New World"
Symphony is the principal work. The Largo movement, popularly known as
"Goin' Home" and loosely based on "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,"
will feature the concert debut of UTC's new English horn, played by UTC
junior music major Adam Puryear.
Dr. Jonathan McNair, of the UTC Music Department will start off the program
by conducting his rousing "USA March Variation" from "The
Millenium Nutcracker". The program will also feature recent UTC music
graduate Bret Alford playing Koussevitsky's famous String Bass Concerto.
Rounding off the program will be music from Prokofiev's "Lieutenant
Kije Suite", including the famous "Troika".
Next, on Monday, April 15 let the UTC Percussion Ensemble
rock your tax worries away at 8 p.m. in the Roland Hayes Hall of the UTC
Fine Arts Center.
You will hear some new and exciting works for percussion according to
director Dr. Monte Coulter, director, including David Gillinghams
"Stained Glass" and Brett Dietzs "Sharpened Stick."
These are difficult works which were performed at the Percussive Arts
Society International Convention in Nashville last November, where the
UTC Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform a Terrace Concert.
Also on the program April 15 will be the Rondo from Mozarts Eine
Line Nachtmusik, and Coulters arrangement of Albert Kings
"Youre Gonna Need Me."
Ridgeland High School Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of James
Smith will open for the UTC Percussion Ensemble.
On Tuesday, April 16, under the direction of Dr. William R. Lee,
professor of music at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, The
UTC Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble Spring Concert, will be performed at 7
p.m. in Patten Chapel.
Patten Chapel is located up the hill from the UTC Music Department, near
the administration buildings under the bell tower.
