UTC has been named Corporate Business of the Year by the 2002 Minority
Enterprise Development Week Award Committee.
"This award serves to recognize a corporate business that supports
an environment for minority enterprise development in Chattanooga,"
according to Charles Payne of the nomination committee.
UTC has partnered with the M.L. King neighborhood, working together toward
economic development, public service, quality of life enhancements and
K-16 educational opportunities.
With its expansion between McCallie Avenue to M.L. King Boulevard, the
University developed a program to ensure diversity in the temporary and
permanent work forces of trade and construction business awarded capital
projects.
Additionally, UTC began a program to expand financial opportunities for
minority-owned businesses who wish to market their services and products
to the University community. In partnership with the Lyndhurst Foundation,
UTC works with the M.L. neighborhood through a new housing incentive program
called "Live Where You Work," allowing full-time faculty and
staff $5,000 toward a down payment, and $2,000 per year for five years
for home improvements, etc.
In support of higher education, during the last year the University established
an academic scholarship program to facilitate the UTC enrollment of M.L.
King neighborhood residents. UTC is the only higher education institution
in Tennessee to exceed the diversity goals set by the courts in all three
categories. They are student enrollment, faculty hires and staff hires.
Last year, the University held its first annual Legacy Award Dinner, recognizing
leaders in the Chattanooga area whose demonstrated commitment to diversity
has made a difference in the life of past, present and future citizens.
"The Universitys students, faculty, staff and alumni are delighted
to receive this award," said UTC Chancellor Bill Stacy.
