C.S. Lewis Lecture features Dr. Roger
Lundin
Dr. Roger W. Lundin, a Clyde S. Kilby Professor
of English at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois will present
" ‘Nimble Believing’: Modern Literature and the
Conflict of Interpretations," the 21st annual C.S. Lewis Lecture
on Monday, April 7, 7: 30 p.m., in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall,
UTC Fine Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The Collegiate Christian Fellowship will sponsor the The C.S. Lewis
Lectureship, which was established in Chattanooga in 1983. It’s
goal is to continue and celebrate the Christian and literary legacy
of C.S. Lewis, who died in 1963. His writing style varied from literary
criticism and theology to children’s literature, science fiction
and poetry. Some of his works include Mere Christianity, The
Screwtape Letters, and The Chronicles of Narnia.
Lundin has also served as a Visiting Professor of English at the
University of Notre Dame in 2000-2001. In 1998, the American Library
Association selected his book, Emily Dickinson and The Art of
Belief, as an "Outstanding Academic Book" and Books
and Culture magazine selected it as "Book of the Year."
In 2003, a second edition of this title will be published as well
as his new book, Crossing Boundaries: Literature and Theology
in the Public Sphere. He has also co-authored such works as
The Promise of Hermeneutics (1999), which was a follow-up
to the 1985 book, The Responsibility of Hermeneutics. Other
co-authored works include The Culture of Interpretation: Christian
Faith and the Postmodern World and Literature Through the
Eyes of Faith. His academic honors include being named Junior
Teacher of the Year at Wheaton in 1984, Senior Teacher of the Year
in 1995 and Senior Fellow at the Erasmus Institute at Notre Dame
in 1999-2000.
Lundin earned his B.A. in Literature from Wheaton in 1971 and a
M.A. in Theological Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary
in 1974. In 1976 he received his M.A. in English and three years
later earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Connecticut.
Lundin has served on various advisory boards, including the Center
for Christian Studies at Gordon College and for Theology Through
the Arts at Cambridge University. He also was a member of the editorial
advisory board for the Christian Scholar’s Review,
and a contributing editor for The Reformed Journal. He
is currently teaching Modern European Literature, American Literature:
Beginnings to Romanticism, and a Senior Seminar at Wheaton.
