and Leaders Bell and Pierce to be Honored
General B.B. Bell, Commanding General, U.S. Army,
Europe and Seventh Army headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany will
discuss The Global War on Terrorism—A Real War of
Values and Ideals Fought by "Small Town, USA"
Tuesday, May 20 at 11:45 a.m. in 114 Fletcher Hall on the UTC campus.

Later that evening, Bell will receive the 2003 Distinguished Alumnus
Award from UTC at the Legends and Leaders Banquet, to be held Tuesday,
May 20 at the Chattanooga Gold and Country Club.
Among the military decorations Bell has received during his prestigious
career are the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service
Medal, Legion of Merit with three Oak Leaf Cluster. Bell, 55, received
U.S. Senate approval in October, 2002 for the top post in America’s
European Command.
"We are extremely proud of General Bell’s accomplishments
and the faith the U.S. government has placed in his abilities,"
said UTC Chancellor Bill Stacy.
Bell’s interest in the military began with ROTC, when Bell
was a student on the UTC campus. He served two years uncommitted,
and he was then offered a scholarship in his junior year. Upon graduation
in 1969, his Army career began as an armor officer.
Bell has served as executive officer to the Commander in Chief,
U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, and Operations
Desert Shield/Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia.
Charles Pierce, a 1962 alumnus, will also be honored
at the Legends and Leaders Banquet. He will receive the 2003 UTC
Outstanding Service Award. Pierce has served in every facet of alumni
volunteer work. Besides his work with the UTC scholarship committee,
Pierce has also served on the UC Foundation, UTC Athletic Board
and Chancellor’s Roundtable. Pierce has also been active with
the UTC Alumni Council, serving two terms as president, and three
terms on the UTNAA Board of Governors. Pierce also has an extensive
record of civic service.
