IMPORTANT:
Immunization Records Required of Incoming Students
Every year, college students across the country face serious
health consequences caused by Hepatitis B and meningococcal meningitis.
In an effort to better inform Tennessee college students of those health
risks, the Tennessee General Assembly requires colleges to provide educational
material regarding vaccinations against these ailments.
This means some changes for students living on campus beginning fall,
2003. Prior to check in to UTC housing, resident students must provide
proof of immunization against Hepatitis B and meningococcal meningitis
or sign a waiver choosing not to be immunized.
All students who will live in University housing this fall will be receiving
information by U.S. Mail and email about the risks of meningococcal meningitis
infection.
“If they refuse immunization, the waiver states that the University
is not held responsible. If a student is under 18 years old, their parents
must sign the papers for refusal of immunization,” UTC Housing Director
Stephen Hood said.
All students must provide proof of having been immunized with two measles
(MMR) vaccinations since age 12 months if the student was born after 1956.
