UTNAA President to address August graduates

The Univeristy of Tennessee at Chattanooga will celebrate summer commencement on Sunday, August 8, at 2 p.m. in the McKenzie Arena. Approximately 350 students are expected to receive degrees.

Spruell Driver, Jr., a Nashville attorney and president of the University of Tennessee National Alumni Association, will deliver the keynote address.

Driver, an associate with the firm Miller and Martin PLLC, practices before the Tennessee General Assembly as a registered lobbyist on behalf of various clients, including healthcare organizations, insurance companies, telecommunications companies, and professional groups, concentrating in the areas of government relations, commercial lending and real estate law, healthcare law, and business transactions

A 1987 industrial engineering graduate from UT Knoxville, Driver attended Duke University School of Law, graduating in 1991.

In 1998, Driver was named special counsel to the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Tennessee General Assembly's Office of Legal Services. His work involved counsel for the House Finance Ways and Means Committee; the House Budget Subcommittee; the House Conservation and Environment Committee; the Senate Environment, Conservation and Tourism Committee; and the Tennessee Black Caucus of State Legislators.

The Tennessee Supreme Court tapped Driver to head its Judicial Education and Program Services Division in 2000. In this position, he was responsible for the statewide management of programs in alternative dispute resolution, judicial education, court improvement, and court reporting services. Driver returned to private practice in 2002 when he joined Miller and Martin.

Prior to selection as UTNAA president, Driver has served as treasurer and president-elect. He has been a member of the UTNAA Board of Governors since 2000 and has previously served on the Davidson County UTNAA Chapter Board of Directors.
