Honored at Chattanooga Business Expo
Sandy Cole of the Center for Community Career Education was pleasantly
surprised at the 2004 Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce Business Expo
when she was presented with an award for her work with Reality Check.
Reality Check is a program offered through the Chattanooga Area Chamber
of Commerce to local high school freshmen to experience life as if
they were 25 years old and the primary wage earner of their household.
Cole is the Project Director of Bradley/Walker GEAR UP, under the Center
for Community Career Education on the UTC campus.
Rebecca Paul, CEO of the Tennessee
Lottery told the luncheon crowd at
the Business Expo that in the short life of the Tennessee Lottery, $141
million has been raised, with one third earmarked for college scholarships.
It is estimated that $88 million will be available to fund college scholarships
beginning next fall.
Before coming to start up the Tennessee Lottery, Paul established the
Georgia Lottery, which she says has produced scholarships that now encourage
75% of the best and brightest students to remain in their home state.
“Because of the success of the Georgia Lottery, the Tennessee legislature
copied the legislation almost verbatim,” Paul said.

Lottery Scholarships.
Over 2,000 people came through the Chattanooga Business Expo, where professors
and staff from UTC booths answered questions about undergraduate, graduate
and doctoral degrees at the University.
