Excitement Builds for New Building
Both UTC campus newcomers and vintage friends marvel as they turn off
McCallie Avenue onto Palmetto and see the construction of the impressive
Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics Building, located across
from the Fine Arts Building on Vine Street.
"It is exciting to be able to watch a first class facility being
built in front of our eyes," according to Dr. Jim Henry, professor
in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

By early summer 2003, the building is expected to be completed, and engineering
and computer science faculty will have bragging rights to the largest
facility on campus. Funded by the state at $28.8 million, the structure
will actually hold two buildings. The East Building will be used for office
space, and the West Building will house computational laboratory facilities,
with some of them being on-line labs operational on the Internet, state
of the art classroom,s and auditoriums.
"Windows between the laboratories and hallway will allow visitors,
faculty and students to view the learning process. And in the laboratories,
we will be able to demonstrate world class developments that UTC faculty
have made over the last 10-20 years," Henry said.
Additionally, advanced teaching resources and research facilities will
be included in the design. Faculty and students anticipate the new Computational
Engineering doctoral program will also be housed in the new UTC facility.
New technology, developed at UTC, will allow students the option of doing
their work on campus or at home through a continuous Internet connection.
These on-line labs will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, according
to Henry.
