UTC
to Participate in New Scholarship Program
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is pleased to offer the
edscholar Program to designated recipients to underwrite their tuition
expenses over four years. Incoming freshmen selected as edscholars
will be well-rounded students who will be a credit to UTC and to
their respective communities.
Student loan provider and secondary market, edsouth, and servicing
partner, edamerica are sponsoring the edscholar Program to expand
access to higher education throughout Tennessee. Tommy Schumpert,
retired two-term Knox County Executive and former school administrator
serves as edscholar Program Director.
"This is a substantial scholarship that provides an additional
$21,000 to reward excellent Tennessee high school students. These
are the students we want to attract to our University," according
to Jonathan Looney, UTC Director of Financial Aid.
Specifically, the edscholar Program will award scholarships to qualified
students in their freshman year with a commitment to continue the
award to the same students pending their compliance with scholarship
retention requirements up to a four-year period. The edscholar awards
will be disbursed to the financial aid office of UTC on behalf of
the recipients. Awards are based on a variety of criteria including
leadership, academic merit, community service and financial need
and will be funded for the 2003-04 academic year. Designated edscholars
must be Tennessee residents.
Based on enrollment figures at UTC, five individual scholarships
will be awarded to incoming freshmen next academic year. Scholarships
from edscholar will be ordered at 58 different schools across Tennessee
for a total of $3,000,000.
