off the Press: UTC Art Department Benefits from Graphic Design Gift
National Posters, Inc. has awarded a $3,000 unrestricted gift to the
graphic design area of the UTC Art Department. The proceeds were generated
from an annual golf tournament.
“The University has provided us with some wonderful interns for
more than four years, and we have hired many UTC alumni,” according
to Casey Scott, Vice President of National Posters, Inc.
Alan White, head of the UTC Art Department, is grateful for the funds. “When
they told me it was $3,000, I said that in these tough times for higher
education, that was a windfall for us,” White said.
National Posters, Inc., National Posters Digital and Retail Merchandising
Group, are the Chattanooga divisions of National Print Group. Additional
National Print Group facilities are located in Knoxville, Atlanta, Dallas
and Lansing, Michigan. Locally, the company frequently opens its doors
to UTC graphic design students.
“
Our graphic design students enjoy taking tours, and our interns learn
a lot. Our interns get a hands-on experience, and they have the opportunity
to work with a lot of digital equipment,” said Matt Greenwell,
UC Foundation Associate Professor.
“
The interns have done well, they suit our needs well, and they are very
professional,” said Michael Schrage, President of the Retail Merchandising
Group. “We give them basic responsibilities, and as their skills
grow, they are given more to do. We are making an investment in them
so that as our needs grow, we would like to be able to consider hiring
these students.”
It is an arrangement that works well for everyone involved in the partnership,
according to White. “To us, it is the ideal internship for our
students,” White said.
