Engages Students in Service Learning
UTC accounting students partnered with accounting professionals
this week to prepare tax returns for clients at the Southeast Tennessee
Legal Services office, allowing Dr. Melanie McCoskey to move her
teaching beyond the classroom and into service learning.
"Anyone can go out and do service projects, but taking actual
classroom knowledge and applying it to community service is very
beneficial for the students. We also have marketing professors and
others in the UTC College of Business who involve their students
in service learning," McCoskey said.
Savings of up to $200 could be realized by clients participating
in the non-profit outreach, according to McCoskey. The University
supplies the software and takes care of the on-line filing of the
forms.
McCoskey's master's level accounting class will be preparing
tax returns for clients at the Harriet Tubman housing development
and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.
The University thanks the following Certified Public Accounting
firms for participating in this outreach:
Hazlett, Lewis and Bieter
Decosimo
Wilkins, Crews and Henderson
Henderson, Hutcherson and McCullough
