Inclement Weather Policy
In the event that a schedule is altered, every effort will be made to begin classes at a scheduled class starting time. If the announced start time does not coincide with a class start time, students and faculty should report to the class that would be in session at the announced opening time. For example, if the University opened at 10 a.m. on a Thursday, faculty and students should report to the classes that began at 9:25 a.m.
Basically, go to where you would normally be at the announced start time.
As soon as campus safety officials, campus police, and facilities management make a decision, the Office of University Relations contacts the following local media outlets:
- WDEF Channel 12 (Chattanooga Comcast Cable Channel 13)
- WRCB Channel 3 (Chattanooga Comcast Cable Channel 04)
- WTVC Channel 9 (Chattnaooga Comcast Cable Channel 10)
- WUTC, FM88.1 will also announce schedule changes.
We will also call as many radio stations as answer. Most radio stations no longer operate a news department and their morning staffs are small. Often our calls to them during bad weather are not answered.
You can also call several phone numbers for up-to-date information. The main UTC line, 425-4111, will be programmed with current information, as will the UTC Inclement Weather Line, 425-4SNO (4766) and the University Relations main line, 425-4363.
Additionally, if at all possible, the schedule change will be reflected on http://www.utc.edu, an email and text alert will be distributed, and updates will be posted on the University’s social media sites.
Each of these is dependent upon electrical power, phone and other utility availability at the homes of University Relations staff members and the campus. We will do our absolute best to keep each of these outlets updated. If you are in doubt about the schedule, consult multiple sources.
When we experience bad weather, please be patient, safe, and smart. Use your best judgment about conditions in your area. Employees who feel they cannot reach the campus should contact their supervisors.
Likewise, students are advised to contact faculty members if they are unable to reach campus because of conditions in their areas.
If inclement weather hits during operating hours
If weather conditions develop that threaten the safety of faculty, staff, and students--working with local safety officials--UTC Campus Police, Safety and Risk Management, and Facilities Planning and Management will make a decision regarding the closing of campus. This decision will be reported using all of the methods listed above.
