WUTC-FM 88.1 Honors Black History Month Throughout February, WUTC-FM 88.1 will broadcast several special programs in honor of Black History Month. On Wednesday, Feb. 11, James Earl Jones narrates the award-winning documentary "Rosewood Reborn." The broadcast chronicles the dramatic story of Rosewood, Florida, which began in 1923 when a white woman from a nearby town claimed that a black man had assaulted her. Her allegations resulted in the destruction of Rosewood. Survivors and participants recall the events, the decades of fear and silence, and the final victory against the state of Florida over sixty years later. The story will air at noon and again at 7 p.m. The influence of African culture in popular music is explored in "Echoes of Africa," a four-part series beginning February 16, at 9 p.m. The first program focuses on the impact that family and community traditions had on three artists' careers, including Gulla historian and performer Frankie Quimby. On Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 9 p.m., Djimo Kouyaye, an oral historian born in Senegal, West Africa, hosts "The African Diaspora." "Piedmont Blues/Rhythm and Blues," will be presented Thursday, Feb. 19, at 9 p.m., with special guests, John Cephas and Phil Wiggins. Cephas and Wiggins won the coveted W.C. Handy Award for the "Best Traditional Blues Recording" in 1987 and 1989. The series concludes Friday, Feb. 20, at 9 p.m., with "Gospel/Sacred Music," featuring Fontella Bass, the Aubrey Ghent Ensemble and the Birmingham Sunlights. Also during Black History Month the "Timeless Jazz" program, which runs each Sunday from 4-6 p.m., will feature the life stories and works of jazz legends Eubie Blake, Kenny Dorham and Dexter Gordon.
