Trio contends in U.S Amateur; Qvicker outstanding on European PGA Tour

UTC golfers Bryce Ledford, Jonathan Hodge and Derek Rende qualified for the U.S. Amateur Tournament at the Olympic Club in California, and Ledford and Hodge both won their opening matches to advance to the second round.

Fredrick Qvicker, a Stockholm, Sweden, sophomore, made the cut on the European PGA Tour at the Scandinavian Masters, where he was the low amateur.

“Bryce and Jon really put a lot of work into their games and it is showed this summer,” said Chattanooga head golf coach Mark Guhne.  “Bryce was first alternate twice at the Amateur and getting in his last chance meant a lot to him, so I was happy to see him do well.  Jon turned a few heads at this event last year; he thrives in this type of environment.  When you add what Fredrick Qvicker did, it was a good couple of weeks for the Chattanooga golf program.”

Hodge, who was seeded 28th in the 64-player field, advanced to match play for the second consecutive year.   Rende missed the cut in his first Amateur.

Hodge is the reigning Player-of-the-Year in the Southern Conference - earning his second All-Conference selection, while Ledford was named All SoCon for the third time.  Rende was the SoCon’s Freshman-of-the-Year.  Last year, the trio led the Mocs to the program’s first NCAA Regional appearance by claiming the second Southern Conference championship in school history.

UTC Women’s Golf Preview

It has been nearly two years since UTC announced it would field a women’s golf team.

The Lady Mocs’ first tournament of the 2007 fall season was a homecoming of sorts for first-year Head Coach Colette Murray. Chattanooga traveled to Glencoe, Ala. for the Chris Barrister Golf Classic hosted by Jacksonville State. The Dumfries, Scotland, native is a 2004 graduate of the school, and it wasn’t by accident that this tournament was the Lady Mocs’ first.

“Normally their tournament is in early October,” Murray said. “It was a good course that gave me a good idea of how good we’re going to be. It was challenging both mentally and physically and was a good test.”

The Lady Mocs won the tournament. Chattanooga's first day team score was the best one-day score in the tournament's history.

The fall schedule, consisting of five tournaments spaced out from the beginning of September through late October, was not an easy one to put together.

“It’s hard to get into tournaments when you have nothing to justify why you should be in them,” Murray said. “I’ve managed to get into them by people knowing me and knowing what I’m trying to do here.”

Two tournaments on the fall calendar are hosted by Southern Conference schools Western Carolina and the College of Charleston. The Catamounts will host the Great Smokies Women’s Intercollegiate later this month and will feature more than 25 teams, while Murray says the Cougars’ tournament at the Oak Point Golf Course is probably the best.

“If we do well in the Western Carolina tournament, that will be good for our rankings,” Murray said. “However, the Kiawah Island (S.C.) tournament has always had a good reputation for having good teams in it. I look forward to the competition and seeing how we will do.”

The remaining two fall tournaments on the slate will be Iowa’s Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City and the LPGA International Xavier Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla.

When Murray first arrived at UTC, she was charged with finding quality athletes to fill her roster. Her first signee came from her native Scotland. Kelly Brotherton, of Dollar, transferred to Chattanooga from Colorado State and redshirted last year along with Kayla Stewart (Cookeville, Tenn.) who spent her first year with Memphis.

“I’ve put a lot of pressure on the two of them,” Murray said. “They both have their strengths in different places and they are aware of their roles on this team. In order for a team to function properly, everyone must know the role they play and be prepared to handle it.”

Of the three remaining players, Katie Taylor (Talbot, Tenn.), also has collegiate experience, having spent last season at Tennessee Tech. Emma de Groot of Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia, and Christine Wolf of Igls, Austria, complete the roster.

With just five players this year, the pressure will be greater as the top four scores from each round are counted toward the team score.

“It would take pressure off the players to not to have to score,” Murray said. “But they aren’t going to ask me how the others are doing this year. Every score is going to count.”

Anaheim Classic

Anaheim Classic graphicESPN Regional Television, Inc. has announced that UTC will compete in the inaugural Anaheim Classic, an eight-team, 12-game, bracketed collegiate basketball tournament.  The event will take place November 22, 23 and 25 at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

The field includes two NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 teams from last season, Southern California and Southern Illinois, as well as NCAA first-round participant Miami-Ohio. Complete tournament action will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Two teams in the 2007 Anaheim Classic field participated in the 2007 National Invitation Tournament. South Alabama played in the opening round of the NIT, and Mississippi State advanced to the semifinals.

San Diego and California-Irvine join the Mocs to comprise the field. All eight of the teams in the field advanced to the semifinals of their post-season conference tournaments.

“We are excited about this opportunity,” said Chattanooga head coach John Shulman.  “This is a very strong field and we get to open the tournament with the team that ended last season number seven in the RPI.  I think tournaments like this are good opportunities to prepare for the conference season.”

The Mocs play the second game of the event, taking on Southern Illinois at 4 p.m. (EST) on ESPNU.  The winner will face Mississippi State or UC-Irvine Friday at 3 p.m. (EST) on ESPN2.  All eight teams will have Saturday off before retuning to action on Sunday.  The full tournament bracket is available online at www.GoMocs.com .

Ticket packages range from $15 to $75 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com or at the Anaheim Convention Center Box Office.  Travel packages are available at www.GETTravel.com.

Athletics unveils new uniforms, logos and improved website

The Athletics Department kicked off the 2007-08 season with new football uniforms and new helmets. The department also officially launched its new athletics website and all its features.

New football uniforms“We have been working diligently on some new ideas and initiatives which we feel are going to enhance our products and our programs tremendously. We hope to create a buzz which, in turn, will attract more people toward Mocs Athletics and make those who are already followers proud to be part of the program,” said UTC Director of Athletics Rick Hart.

Head Football Coach Rodney Allison said there is a lot of excitement about the new uniforms for the Mocs, but “none were more excited than our players.”Hart said the UTC Athletics brand, while steeped in tradition, is evolving. The UTC marks were last revamped in 1997. “They did not accurately define who we are today,” Hart said. No marks were eliminated, but Hart said the look was refined. With a renewed commitment to the original blue and gold colors, Hart explained that there is no longer fragmentation in the fonts and the “C” logo. He thanked University Graphics Manager April Cox for designing the logos and marks and Andrew Horton, Athletics, for assuming the role of creative director.

UTC has partnered with XOS Technologies to host its official athletics website. The site’s URL address, www.GoMocs.com, remains the same, but the new state-of-the-art site offers a variety of interactive features including live and archived audio and video streams, real-time game statistics, on-line store, auctions and ticket sales and many other features.
