Campus beautification projects Recently completed beautification projects are improving the landscape of campus.
Heritage Plaza and the Pedestrian Mall, which extends from East Fifth Street to Vine Street in the area between the University Center and Grote Hall, now features shrubs, trees, planters, benches, table and chair sets and granite medallions.
A new drive through visitors’ booth on Douglas Street near East Fifth welcomes newcomers to campus. “Check out the new campus map and building/department directory that is adjacent to the kiosk,” said Janet Spraker, Director of Engineering Services at UTC.
Many of the campus beautification projects on campus supported by the Lupton Renaissance Fund and entrepreneur and Cleveland, Tennessee native Brenda Lawson.
Jones Observatory has celebrated a grand reopening. A $280,000 makeover included sandblasting and repainting of the dome, replacing the roof, refurbishing the front door and adding new brickwork. Constructed in 1936 for the Chattanooga School System, Jones Observatory was turned over to the University for 99 years in a one dollar lease agreement during World War II. Jack Pitkin, Operations Manager of the Jones Observatory, encourages everyone to come to the grand opening, and to attend other events listed on the Spring 2007 schedule.
Spraker is hopeful work will begin soon on the Student Wellness Center, to be built in the field across from the McKenzie Arena on East Fifth Street. The Athletic Strength & Conditioning Center is scheduled to be built at the site of the Siskin Building, located on Vine Street near Houston Street.
