Student Profile - Donnie Johnson Jr.
| "My experience in UHON has been rather unique, since I am an associate scholar. I came into the program during the spring semester of my sophomore year and since that point my education and life has dramatically shifted in course. There are several advantages the program offers that I find extremely beneficial, such as the Reading Room. I'm delighted to have 24-hour access to a facility on campus where I can study in relative tranquility. Moreover, I've also found that UHON has awakened a dormant desire within me to learn beyond the confines of the classroom setting. The program continuously emphasizes the |

importance and the benefits of studying abroad and actively helps students in these pursuits. This summer I traveled to Rome, Italy for the purpose of studying the Italian language and Roman influences on English literature at John Cabot University. My summer in Italy has opened my eyes to so many outlets, many of which I plan to actively pursue. I'm quite certain that if I had not been in the program, I would have never traveled to Rome. I'm glad to be a member of something truly special." Donnie is a senior double majoring in Latin and English: Writing. In August, he was elected as associate representative to the UHON Council and is serving as chair of the Facilities Committee. He also organizes the weekly UHON Program Movie Night in the Reading Room, a popular event featuring a wide variety of independent films, foreign films and cult classics shown on the big screen free of charge. Beyond his UHON involvement, Donnie is very active with campus and community service. He has worked as a tutor in the Writing Center since Fall 2002. He is founder and president of the UTC chapter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and has worked on the Black Student Alliance and the Women's Action Council. He is UTC coordinator of the Campus Green Party, was a Tennessee delegate to the national presidential convention in June 2004 and continues to serve on the Platform Committee of the Green Party of Tennessee. He served on the UTC Tsunami Relief Committee in the Spring and Summer of 2005 and is an ongoing volunteer at St. Matthew's Homeless Shelter and with Food Not Bombs! |
