1. Every student at UTC should be given an
email address. A server should be established for students to search for an
email address, similar to that in use for faculty and staff.
Analysis: Universal student email
addresses are not implemented; estimated date summer, 2001. There are no current plans for a student ph
server similar to the faculty/staff server.
2. Every member of the UTC Alumni organization
should be offered a UTC email address. Such an address should remain in
effect as long as the individual remains a member in good standing of the
Alumni organization as indicated by, for example, yearly contributions.
Analysis: Not implemented. UTC Alumni may obtain a free email account
through a commercial portal company, http://www.zchattanooga.com/
but this is not a UTC address.
3. Students should be allowed to create
personal web pages on Moccasun, and these should be retrievable over the
Internet.
Analysis: Not implemented. This requires only policy approval; there
are no technical issues and very little computing staff time is required to
implement this. This will impact the
TRC and HelpDesk.
4.
It should be the policy of the University that any information produced by the University should be available over the
Internet. This is especially true of information made available to the
students (e.g. admission materials, application, Undergraduate Catalog,
Graduate Catalog, Student Handbook, STARS) and publicity information.
Analysis: No such policy
exists. Materials are available due to
the work of individuals and departments, rather than an organized
University-wide effort. Formats of
documents and pages vary; not all are available in HTML.

5.
Since it is the de facto policy, free
student printing should be institutionalized, with proper support and
management.
Analysis: Note that "free"
does not mean "unlimited". No
funds have been allocated to support
printing in departmental labs.
