Vision for technology:
What are the Institutional objectives for technology?
How do we measure success of Information Technology at UTC?
How can we ensure the participation of faculty/staff/students in creating and achieving the Vision?
How can we carry out proactive technology planning for the future?
Model of control: Centralized, decentralized, or some middle ground?
What model for control should we adopt for IT at UTC:
What model for funding should we adopt for IT at UTC:
Standards for hardware, software, networked devices:
Who develops? Who enforces? Who updates?
Standards are applied to: staffing, services, equipment, labs, maintenance/replacement?
Identify clearly centralized objects: network, Internet bandwidth, email, web server, security,
Help Desk, training, Networking Services, central servers operation and maintenance
Identify clearly decentralized objects: departmental computer labs? departmental servers and
printers?
Classroom technology:
Physical issues - lighting, blinds, power, projection screen
Equipment issues - network, computer, projector, sound, TV, VCR; overhead?
Equipment placement: centralized, decentralized, or some middle ground?
Training requirements for faculty and staff
Maintenance and replacement policies
Web:
How can we more effectively use the web to deliver instruction, instructional materials, and services?
How can we use the web to communicate more effectively:
With Students? Faculty? Staff? Prospective students? The Community?
How can we develop a Campus-wide unified effort, including:
University relations, Academic Computing, academic units, faculty, TRC, CECA, administrative units?
How can we change our operational systems to deliver all information via IT:
Bulletin, Stars, Student Information, announcements, calendar, etc?
Can we reduce the need for producing, moving, and storing paper copies?
Security:
How do we balance network security against academic freedom and open access?
Identify clearly centralized security concerns: network integrity, central servers, email, web server
Are there any decentralized security issues or all security issues centralized?
Centralized security support for decentralized servers/labs/users?
Staffing:
Centralized versus decentralized staffing with regards to funding and control?
Coordination and cooperation across separate Divisions, Academic units, Central/Local, etc?
How do we establish staffing levels to meet service expectations?
Services:
Develop defined sets of services for Instructional services, Student IT services, Desktop services
Identify the infrastructure, equipment, and staff needed to deliver the defined services?
What services and support will we provide for student-owned equipment?
Budgetary Issues:
Who is responsible for maintenance and upgrades of existing equipment?
What replacement policy do we have for aging equipment?
For what categories of expenditures should money come from the Student Technology Fee?
For what categories of expenditures should money come from the general budget?
Will units have a budget line item for technology?
How can we cover the costs of technology?
