How can you help Blue and Gold Make Green?

Properly shut down your work area each and every day, and take special measures during holidays:

Daily:

  • SHUT DOWN (not unplug) computer hard drives, monitors, and speakers
  • Turn OFF electronics (CD players, adding machines, chargers, overhead projectors, and other portable devices)
  • TURN OFF hardwired electronics (televisions, projector systems, and SmartBoards)
  • POWER OFF/UNPLUG all unnecessary lab and office equipment
  • TURN OUT the lights if you will be gone for more than 15 minutes
  • Don’t use the handicapped door buttons unless necessary

Holidays:

  • UNPLUG electronics such as CD players, adding machines, chargers, overhead projectors, and other portable devices
  • UNPLUG microwaves, coffee makers, and other small appliances in breakrooms
  • TURN DOWN thermostats with manual control to at least 65 degrees (heating season) and 76 (cooling season)

Be an environmental steward at work, school and at home:

  • Install energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Keep your thermostat at least 5 degrees cooler in the winter (5 degrees warmer in the summer) when you are away from home
  • Weatherize your home to decrease utility bills
  • Turn OFF the water when brushing your teeth, and run cold water
  • Wash full loads of dishes and clothes
  • Take the bus, carpool, or ride your bike
  • Use the refillable water bottle stations in the University Center and the ARC
  • Buy American and buy GREEN products with recycled content
  • Shop for Energy Star Home electronics and appliances
  • Conserve paper by printing on both sides
  • Hop on the bus or ride your bike to get to school
  • Bring your own cup (BYOC) to parties, events, the coffee shop
  • Recycle!
