PEER MENTORING PROGRAM (P.A.C.E.)
Mission Statement
The Peer Mentoring Program is setting the P.A.C.E. (Preparing A way for Continued Excellence). The program will serve as a foundation for early success.
The goal of the mentoring component of Student Support Services is to provide participants with academic and personal support and encouragement in the areas of study skills, goal setting, orientation to campus services and programs, and adjustment related concerns. This goal is accomplished by assisting students with their adjustment to a new environment, sharing resources, sparking interest, and providing support and encouragement to help students obtain their goals in higher education. Participants in the program are encouraged to develop a clearer understanding of themselves, their attitudes, abilities, interests, ambitions, strengths, and limitations as they relate to the academic environment.
Purpose
The Mentor Program was created to strengthen the UTC student community by building alliances between first-year students and upper division students. Mentors help new students become adapted to the UTC community quickly through informal interaction and by sharing their best tips for success. This relationship helps the first year student adapt academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. In addition, mentors strengthen their connections to the college through training and interactions with UTC staff. By entering the Mentoring Program, you will be matched with an upper division UTC student who may share many of your interests, experiences and backgrounds. Your mentor will be a valuable source of information and motivate your to succeed during your first year.
What is a Mentor?
A mentor is a member of the Student Support Services staff and reports to the Academic Specialist. They assist students with academic and personal concerns. Mentors will assist program participants in identifying and developing the knowledge needed to achieve success within the university setting. Within the P.A.C.E program mentors take on numerous roles -a mentor is a friend, a resource person, a coach or guide, a motivator and, sometimes, a confidante. Mentors meet with their mentees at least once a week to participate in campus activities, study, lend a listening ear and a helping hand, and to build lasting relationships. Mentees are invited too meet, call, or e-mail mentors as often as you like because building relationships requires the participation of both mentors and mentees.
