Get tired of losing data on your floppy disk? Us too. That is why we are giving away 70 flash drives (also known as pen drive or USB drive) to SSS participants on first come first serve basis. Sign up at the SSS front desk, and pick up your flash drive today.
What is Flash Drive?
Flash drive is an alternative mean to floppy disk to store your documents, pictures...etc. Our flash drive has the capacity of 16 megabytes, which is approximately equal to 12 floppy disks. Flash drive is said to be more durable than floppy disk. Its usage is very similar to floppy disk. If you are not familiar with using a flash drive, ask us how.

---- National TRIO Community Call In Day -----
Please get involved!Thursday, November 10th is the national TRIO call-in day to Capitol Hill. Please call your Members of Congress and Senators and address the TRIO talking points listed below. The toll-free number is:1-800-426-8073You will be calling the US Capitol switch board. Once you get an operator; please ask to be connected to your Representative's or Senator's office. (If you are unsure about your Representative's name, you can visit www.congress.org where you can insert your home address and identify your member of the House.) Once you have been connected to your Member's or Senator's office, please state the following. My name is ____ and I live in _____. I am a TRIO (director, student, alumni, parent, friend, etc) and am calling on behalf of the __#__ TRIO students that live in Mr./Mrs./Ms. ______ district/state. I am calling to express my concern over the possibility that there will be an across-the-board budget cut of up to 5% to the Labor/HHS/Education bill, a cut that would affect the TRIO programs. Although TRIO has a demonstrated record of success, the current funding level only allows approximately 6 percent of the eligible population to be served. Any across-the-board cut would jeopardize current, successful programs in (your city or state). (Please add any personal anecdotes about how these drastic cuts will affect you and your community.) Please also address the following three important TRIO characteristics:
- Focused on Early Intervention
Two of the TRIO Programs, Talent Search and Upward Bound, are early intervention programs. These programs effectively reach students in grades six through 12 who have college potential but often do not recognize or understand their academic and career options beyond high school. Each year, these two programs keep thousands of promising young low-income and minority students in school and focused on career and college success.- TRIO Programs are Designed for First-Generation and Low-Income
Two-thirds of the students in the TRIO Programs come from families with incomes under $24,000 (family of four), where neither parent graduated from college. In most cases, parents have no higher education experience, do not understand the postsecondary process and do not necessarily value a higher education.- TRIO Effectiveness is Built on Relationships
Over a period of several months or years, TRIO Professionals build both personal and professional relationships with their students. Such positive relationships are critical to the success of every TRIO Program. The staff of each TRIO Program creates a climate of support for students as they strive to move out of poverty and dependence. As a result of these strong positive relationships, many TRIO college graduates periodically return to their programs to encourage and inspire current students. It is important that we get as many people to call on Thursday as possible. Please pass this along to your friends, neighbors and others in your community who have been affected by the TRIO programs.

More Memory Tip:
- FILL IN BLANKS
- Make your own flash cards by writing 'fill in the blank' statements on the front of index cards and answers on the back.
- Or do the same with a hand-held tape recorder: Make recorded questions, pauses for answers, then recorded answers.
- SEVEN IS THE MAGIC NUMBER. Repeat difficult information seven times a day for seven days.
-OR- Create seven index cards with the word or fact written on them. Tape the cards in places where you go frequently (i.e., mirror, fridge, etc.) then forget about them. After two weeks you will subliminally absorb the information.- REVEAL
- During review, cover up the text below headings and try to remember what's next.
- This method works well with your notes, outlines and Quick study® charts.
- KEY IDEAS
- Highlight them in your textbooks and outlines
- Give extra attention to bolded words or phrases.
- Make up acronyms or mnemonics to recall (i.e. GIGO = Garbage In; Garbage Out) or (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally = Parenthesis first, then Exponents, then Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction).
- MAPPING
Make a mental image of your notes, outlines, color-coded Quick Study® charts, etc. and where facts are located on them in relation to other topics. These images (fact maps) and their data can often be recalled during tests.

Quick Academic Tips:Brain Power
Can You Remember?
- MEMORIZE FROM GENERAL TO SPECIFIC.Study the big picture, then learn the details. Learning and memorization are like a funnel - the process is not very effective when the small end is at the top.
- CRAMMING DEOS NOT WORK! Cramming for an exam only commits the information to your short-term memory.
- FOUR BASIC REASONS WE FORGET PIECES OF INFORMATION:
1. Don't use the information.
2. Confuse it with other information.
3. Decide the information does not match what you already believe.
4. Never really learned the information in the first place.- KEYS TO REMEMBERING:
1. Be interested. Pay attention. Consciously choose to remember. Establish a need to remember.
2. Visualize: Picture in your mind what you wish to remember.
3. Relate: Relate and form associations between the new ideas and information you wish to remember and information, ideas, persons, things, etc. that you already know.
4. Repeat. Even though something is initially learned, it will more likely be forgotten if not over learned. Be sure to repeat information in your own words.More memory tips coming up next week.
