Scheduling
It is the policy of the Student Health Center to schedule appointments for non-urgent visits. Urgent care is available. Those problems include injuries, lacerations, or acute illness with symptoms such as vomiting, fever higher than 100.4, pain, etc. We ask that patients with non-urgent issues such as colds, sore throats without fever, medicine refills, rashes unrelated to medicines and non-painful rashes schedule an appointment.
If you have recently seen a provider for a problem, you should see them again on a recheck or work-in basis. Evaluations for chronic or ongoing medical problems should be scheduled by appointment. Scheduling appointments permits those with urgent needs be to be assessed more rapidly and not delay the treatment of critically ill patients.
Triage For Sick Visits
A sick visit means that the student will see an RN or clinical support staff member, a Nurse Practitioner (NP), and/or the physician (in that order). An RN will evaluate the student’s health concern and determine the appropriate provider. The RN will sometimes be able to treat the health problem. If the student is a walk in and it is determined the student needs to see the Nurse Practitioner, the chart will be placed in the order of arrival.
Appointed patients will be seen first. However, any student that is triaged as urgent will be seen immediately. Walk-in patients will be seen as time allows. All will be encouraged to make appointments prior to coming in. Urgent care problems are injuries, lacerations, or acute illness with symptoms such as vomiting, fever higher than 100.4, pain, etc. All students with non-urgent issues such as colds, sore throats without fever, medicine refills, rashes unrelated to medicines and non-painful rashes schedule an appointment.
There will be four levels of visits:
- Sick Visits - An RN will evaluate the health concern and determine the appropriate provider. The RN will sometimes be able to treat the health problem. Otherwise the Nurse Practitioner will provide the care.
- Fast Track - The RN will provide immunizations, allergy shots, oral contraceptive refills, review lab results, etc.
- Physicals – complete a physical exam will be conducted by the NP
- Follow up visits
After hours, patients with emergencies will be referred to Erlanger, Memorial and Park Ridge Emergency Rooms depending on patient preference where they will be admitted if needed. The center will follow the University’s Academic Calendar for closings. There will be a provider at the center at all times unless the University is closed. The center will follow the administration’s policy on Snow Days.
