Laboratory Safety


POLICY:

Per University of Tennessee Safety Policies for Biological Safety, the UTC Department of Safety and Risk Management will establish and maintain procedures for annual inspections of laboratories. These inspections will include review for safety and health hazards, the evaluation of protective devices, and the review of laboratory safety procedures in order to ensure the safe handling of all hazardous materials used.

PROCEDURES:

The UTC Department of Safety and Risk Management is responsible for:
  1. Annual laboratory inspections for:
    • Chemical inventories
    • Electrical exposures
    • Housekeeping and storage
    • Physical hazards
    • Handling of hazardous materials and waste
    • Proper signage at laboratory indicating its specific use, hazards and emergency contacts
  2. Evaluation and inspection of protective devices to include:
    • Inspection of fume hoods for flow
    • Inspection of eye wash facilities, emergency showers and other protective contacts
  3. Evaluation for compliance with the University's Chemical Hygiene Plan as required by "Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories (29 CFR 1910.1450)
    This is to include:
    • Authorized use of laboratories
    • Incident and accident reporting and maintenance of records of same
    • Inventory and MSDS maintenance
    • Required labeling of materials to include proper name and hazard
UTC Deans, Directors, and Department Heads are responsible for:
  • Complying with UTC Policies and Procedures for Laboratory Safety.
  • Insuring employee compliance with UTC Policies and Procedures for Laboratory Safety.
  • Insuring proper training of employees and students on laboratory safety.
UTC Employees are responsible for:
  • Complying with UTC Policies and Procedures for Laboratory Safety.
  • Maintaining a safe work environment as it relates to laboratory safety.
