3.4.11 Academic program coordination

For each major in a degree program, the institution assigns responsibility for program coordination, as well as for curriculum development and review, to persons academically qualified in the field.  In those degree programs for which the institution does not identify a major, this requirement applies to a curricular area or concentration.

Narrative:

At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), the department heads and faculty members in each department have the responsibility for the development and oversight of degree programs.  These department heads and faculty members are academically qualified in their fields (see 3.2.8, 3.5.4, and 3.7.1).  Each degree program is assigned to an appropriate department in one of the academic colleges.  There are no degree programs that are coordinated or delivered by individuals other than faculty members or department heads.
At the undergraduate level, department heads coordinate the degree programs.  UTC’s list of department heads documents that all department heads are qualified for this role. For those without the traditional academic credentials, a justification approved by the provost is on file in Faculty Records. Specifically, of the 30 department heads at UTC, 26 have the doctoral degree in the discipline, and the other 4 have an appropriate master’s degree (2 have the MFA, one the MS in interior design, one the MSW in social work).  Department heads promote faculty involvement through academic advising assignments and curriculum development.
At the graduate level, coordinators are appointed by each college for its graduate program.  All four coordinators of the four doctoral programs have the appropriate doctoral degree.  The coordinator for the specialist degree in education has the Ed.S. degree.  For all master’s degree programs, coordinators have the appropriate master’s degree.  Department heads and program faculty members work with the coordinators to develop the curriculum and standards of each degree.
