Yellow Ribbon Program
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) is participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program included as part of the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33). UTC will provide the Yellow Ribbon benefit to 5 student-veterans (or transferees) eligible for enrollment for a maximum benefit amount of $3,000 per student-veteran (or transferees) per academic year. The awards will be granted to eligible student-veterans (or transferees) on a first-come-first-serve basis and will be disbursed over two (2) academic semesters.
Chapter 33 student-veterans who have been rated at the 100% level on the Certificate of Eligibility by the Department of Veterans Affairs (or transferees) are eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
The Yellow Ribbon Program was designed to cover expenses that exceed the highest resident tuition rate in the State of Tennessee. This means tuition and maintenance fees not already covered by VA Benefits. The State of Tennessee’s maximum tuition rate per credit hour is set by the highest undergraduate rate in the State of Tennessee.
- Student-veteran (or transferees) must be fully admitted as an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in credit-hour courses at UTC.
- Student-veteran (or transferees) must be and remain eligible for continued enrollment.
- Student-veteran (or transferees) must have a Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) Certificate of Eligibility showing Yellow Ribbon Program eligibility.
Submit a complete application packet that includes the following documents to the Records Office (109 Race Hall) in-person, by mail, or fax.
- Yellow Ribbon Application
- VA Certificate of Eligibility indicated Yellow Ribbon eligibility
- Copy of current schedule
The application packet will be date stamped by a Records Office staff member with the time of receipt hand-written next to the date stamp. Awards will be assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis as determined by the date and time information on the complete application packet until all of the awards have been granted.
After all awards have been granted, student-veterans (or transferees) will be placed on a waiting list for the current academic year based upon the date and time the application was initially received. Student-veterans (or transferees) on the waiting list must reapply each academic year.
Renewal of Yellow Ribbon Award
The student-veteran (or transferee) will remain part of the Yellow Ribbon Program as long as the student-veteran (or transferee) remains eligible for continued enrollment at UTC or until the student-veteran (or transferee) graduates, leaves the school or is no longer eligible for Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33). Student-veterans (or transferees) must submit the Intent to Re-Enroll form and a copy of their schedule for the subsequent semester to the Records Office by the following dates:
Fall Semester – May 1
Spring Semester – December 1
Summer Semester – April 1
If the student-veteran (or transferee) becomes ineligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program because they are no longer eligible for enrollment, the award will be given to the next eligible student-veteran (or transferee) on the waiting list for the academic year. The ineligible student-veteran must reapply and will receive the award on a first-come first serve basis.
Questions can be directed to a Veterans Affairs Certifying School Official in the Records in 109 Race Hall or by telephone at 423.425.4414. Student-veterans can also send an email to records@utc.edu.
