Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI)
- The MURI program supports basic research in science and engineering at U.S. institutions of higher education (hereafter referred to as "universities") that is of potential interest to the Department of Defense (DoD). The program is focused on multidisciplinary research efforts where more than one traditional discipline interact to provide rapid advances in scientific areas of interest to the DoD. As defined by the DoD, “basic research is systematic study directed toward greater knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena and of observable facts without specific applications towards processes or products in mind. It includes all scientific study and experimentation directed toward increasing fundamental knowledge and understanding in those fields of the physical, engineering, environmental, and life sciences related to long-term national security needs. It is farsighted high payoff research that provides the basis for technological progress.” (http://comptroller.defense.gov/fmr/02b/02b_05.pdf). The DoD’s basic research program invests broadly in many specific fields to ensure that it has early cognizance of new scientific knowledge.

Computing Education for the 21st Century (CE21)
- The Computing Education for the 21st Century (CE21) program aims to build a robust computing research community, a computationally competent 21st century workforce, and a computationally empowered citizenry. In this undertaking, there are three interrelated challenges: the significant underproduction of degrees needed for the computing and computing-related workforce, the longstanding underrepresentation of many segments of our population, and the lack of a presence of computing in K-12. The program seeks proposals that contribute to understanding how diverse student populations are engaged and retained in computing education.Program supports efforts in three tracks:Track 1: Computing Education Research supports proposals that contribute to the creation of a resource base on effective teaching and learning in computing; Track 2: CS 10K proposals support the development of rigorous, academic curricula incorporated into computing courses in 10,000 high schools, taught by10,000 well-trained teachers; and Track 3: Broadening Participation proposals seek to develop and assess small-scale interventions that contribute to knowledge of effective teaching and learning of computing for students from underrepresented groups.

Manufacturing Machines and Equipment (MME)
- The MME program supports fundamental research leading to improved manufacturing machines and equipment, and their application in manufacturing processes. Key goals of the program are to advance the transition of manufacturing from skill-based to knowledge-based activities, and to advance technologies that will enable the manufacturing sector to reduce its environmental and societal impacts. A focus is on the advancement of manufacturing machines and related systems engineering that will enable energy manufacturing on a large scale. The program also supports research on additive manufacturing machines and processes encompassing feature scales from microns to meters (nanometer scale additive manufacturing is supported under the Nanomanufacturing program).

ADVANCE: Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Careers
- For many decades, an increasing number of women have obtained STEM doctoral degrees, however, women, particularly women of color, continue to be significantly underrepresented in almost all STEM academic positions. While the degree of underrepresentation varies among STEM disciplines, women's advancement to senior professorial ranks and leadership roles is an issue in all fields. The underrepresentation of women is also a critical issue for the nation, at large, as its need to develop a globally competitive and diverse workforce increases. Thus, the goal of the ADVANCE program is to develop systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic STEM careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce. ADVANCE also has as its goal to seminally contribute to and inform the general knowledge base on gender equity in the academic STEM disciplines. ADVANCE will support the following types of projects: Institutional Transformation (IT), Institutional Transformation Catalyst (IT-Catalyst), and Partnerships for Adaptation, Implementation, and Dissemination (PAID).

Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS): Core Programs
- The Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) studies the inter-related roles of people, computers, and information. IIS supports research and education activities that 1) develop new knowledge about the role of people in the design and use of information technology (Human Centered Computing); 2) increase our capability to create, manage, and understand data and information in circumstances ranging from personal computers to globally-distributed systems (Information Integration and Informatics); and 3) advance our understanding of how computational systems can exhibit the hallmarks of intelligence (Robust Intelligence).

Computer and Network Systems (CNS): Core Programs
- The Division of Computer and Network Systems (CNS) supports research and education activities that develop new knowledge in two core programs: Computer Systems Research (CSR) and Networking Technology and Systems (NeTS):
- The Computer Systems Research (CSR) program supports transformative research in computer systems including: multi-core architectures, operating systems, middle-ware and run-time support systems, programming models and tools, storage and file systems, hybrid and embedded systems, web-based systems, datacenters, distributed systems, parallel systems, large scale grids, wireless systems, mobile systems, and sensor systems.Research in the CSR Core Area involves developing methodologies, techniques, heuristics, and tools for the analysis, design, construction, optimization, and certification of computing systems to meet specified goals, as well as hardware and software execution platforms and environments.
- The Networking Technology and Systems (NeTS) program supports transformative research on fundamental scientific and technological advances leading to the development of future-generation, high-performance networks and future Internet architectures. The scope of the program includes enterprise, core, and optical networks; peer-to-peer and application-level networks; wireless, mobile, and cellular networks; networks for physical infrastructures; and sensor networks. The program also seeks innovative networking research proposals within application domains such as smart grids, compute grids, clouds, and data centers.

Campus RainWorks Design Challenge Competition
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has opened registration for student teams from colleges and universities across the country to participate in its new design competition, the Campus RainWorks Challenge, through which teams will compete to develop innovative approaches to stormwater management. This first annual competition, will help raise awareness of green design and planning approaches at colleges and universities, and train the next generation of landscape architects, planners, and engineers in green infrastructure principles and design. Stormwater is a major cause of harmful water pollution in urban areas in the U.S., impacting tens of thousands of miles of rivers, streams, and coastal shorelines, as well as hundreds of thousands of acres of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds.
Student teams, working with a faculty advisor, will submit design plans for a proposed green infrastructure project for their campus. Registration for the Campus RainWorks Challenge is open from September 4 through October 5, and entries must be submitted by December 14, 2012 for consideration. Winning entries will be selected by EPA and announced in April 2013. Winning teams will earn a cash prize of $1,500 - $2,500, as well as $8,000 - $11,000 in funds for their faculty advisor to conduct research on green infrastructure. In 2013, EPA plans to expand Campus RainWorks by inviting students to design and complete a demonstration project assessing innovative green infrastructure approaches on their campus.
EPA is encouraging the use of green infrastructure as a solution to help manage stormwater runoff. Green Infrastructure uses vegetation, soils, and natural processes to manage stormwater runoff at its source and provide other community benefits. Green infrastructure is increasingly being used to supplement or substitute for single-purpose “gray” infrastructure investments such as pipes, and ponds. The Campus RainWorks Challenge will help encourage the use of green infrastructure projects on college and university campuses to manage stormwater discharges.

Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI)
- The Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments for research and research training in our Nation's institutions of higher education, museums, science centers, and not-for-profit organizations. This program especially seeks to improve the quality and expand the scope of research and research training in science and engineering, by providing shared instrumentation that fosters the integration of research and education in research-intensive learning environments. Development and acquisition of research instrumentation for shared inter- and/or intra-organizational use are encouraged, as are development efforts that leverage the strengths of private sector partners to build instrument development capacity at academic institutions.
- The NSF MRI grant program allows only three proposal submissions per institution: TWO proposals for
equipment acquisition and ONE proposal for equipment development. For the past several competition
cycles, UTC has had more than two faculty teams who wanted to pursue equipment acquisition grants. In
the event that we have more than two faculty teams interested in equipment acquisition this year, the OPSP will be coordinating an internal review and selection process.

Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers Program (I/UCRC)
- The Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program develops long-term partnerships among industry, academe, and government. The centers are catalyzed by a small investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are primarily supported by industry center members, with NSF taking a supporting role in the development and evolution of the center. Each center is established to conduct research that is of interest to both the industry members and the center faculty. An I/UCRC contributes to the Nation's research infrastructure base and enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education. As appropriate, an I/UCRC uses international collaborations to advance these goals withinthe global context.
