  • Professional Development for Arts Educators Program
  • PDAE supports professional development programs for music, dance, drama, and visual arts K-12 educators that use innovative instructional methods, especially those linked to scientifically-based research. Colleges and universities cannot apply directly, but are strongly encouraged to partner with a local educational agency that draws at least 50 percent of its student population from low income families. Twenty-eight awards averaging about $250,000 each are expected to be made this year.

NSF EPSCoR: Tennessee Solar Conversion and Storage Using Outreach, Research & Education (TN-SCORE) (2/23/11)

  • TN-SCORE Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
  • Offers competitive opportunities for undergraduates (with focus on STEM students) to work in research groups during the summer in an 8-10 week program. Students will receive a $3200 stipend, housing, meals, and supplies as well as a travel stipend for the TN-SCORE annual conference. NSF EPSCoR: Tennessee Solar Conversion and Storage Using Outreach, Research & Education (TN-SCORE) (2/23/11)

  • TN-SCORE Summer Research Opportunity Awards (ROA)
  • Designed for faculty to establish long-term collaboration with a researcher in one of the TN-SCORE thrust areas. The summer experience may involve research at the scientific level, or focus on developing educational outreach programs. The faculty winners will be provided with a summer stipend of $12,500 as well as a $7,500 startup grant for use at their home institution to help translate the experience to the home institution. Tennessee Higher Education Commission (2/18/11)

  • STEM Professional Development
  • The purpose of this particular program is to promote innovative practice in K-12 schools within STEM
    disciplines to further develop K-12 STEM teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge while building a
    repertoire of highly effective STEM professional development programs to be housed and used through
    Tennessee’s STEM Innovation Network. Tennessee’s higher education institutions have the expertise to
    develop and implement such programs. This close collaboration between the institutions and LEAs will
    only further strengthen the goal of increasing student achievement.

  • The Informal Science Education (ISE) program supports innovation in anywhere, anytime, lifelong learning, through investments in research, development, infrastructure, and capacity-building for STEM learning outside formal school settings.

American Honda Foundation (2/18/11)

  • Youth Grants Program
  • Supports projects that meet the needs of youth, especially minority students. Projects have included job training and math, science, technology, and environmental education improvement, including curriculum development.  Emphasis is on broad, innovative, and forward-thinking projects with national scope.

  • Formerly the "Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement program," supports projects to improve the quality of STEM education for all undergraduate students. Especially encourages projects that have potential to bring about widespread adoption of classroom practices that embody understanding of how students learn most effectively. Transferability and dissemination are critical.

  • Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST)
  • The ITEST program responds to current concerns and projections about the growing demand for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals in the U.S. and seeks solutions to help ensure the breadth and depth of the STEM workforce. ITEST supports the development, implementation, testing, and scale-up of implementation models.  It also supports research studies to address questions that point to solutions for building a strong, competent STEM workforce.

  • OBSSR & many NIH institutes & centers encourage behavioral & social science research (R01; R21) on the causes and solutions to health and disabilities disparities in the U.S. population. The primary basic research question is the causes of differences in the health status of populations (e.g., differences between African Americans vs. European Americans or the US population as a whole). The goal is to move beyond documenting the existence of health and disability disparities to addressing causes and solutions. Expires 5/12/13.

  • Enhancing Developmental Biology Research at Undergraduate Institutions
  • NICHD supports applications (R15) to strengthen the developmental biology research environment at educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees, but have not been major recipients of NIH support. Projects that benefit students through exposure to and participation in developmental biology research are encouraged. Also of interest are the use of novel or underutilized animal models in developmental biology research.  Applicants may request up to a total of $150,000 in direct costs. PAR expires 5/14/11.

American Nurses Foundation (2/17/11)

  • Nursing Research Grants
  • Supports research that contributes to nursing science and the enhancement of patient care. Awards are given in all areas of nursing, including patient outcomes, healthcare policy development, critical care, gerontology, women's health, community and family intervention, and other topics. Awards provide start-up funds for graduate students, junior faculty, and senior faculty who are changing their research focus. PI must be a licensed registered nurse who has obtained at least one nursing degree.

  • Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE)
  • The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to overcome technology barriers preventing the development and production of cost-effective, high-efficiency vehicles for the U.S. market and to train a future workforce of automotive engineering professionals who are knowledgeable about, and experienced in, developing and commercializing advanced automotive technologies.

  • This program supports projects to plan, develop, and implement programs to improve undergraduate instruction in international studies and foreign languages.  In FY 11, approximately  $2.4 million may be available for 28 awards. 
  • Each program assisted with federal funds must enhance primarily the international academic program of the institution. Eligible activities may include but are not limited to:
    • Development of a global or international studies program that is interdisciplinary in design;
    • Development of a program that focuses on issues or topics, such as international business or international health;
    • Development of an area studies program and programs in corresponding foreign languages;
    • Creation of innovative curricula that combine the teaching of international studies with professional and pre-professional studies, such as engineering;

  • Arts Works is a newly redesigned program that combines Access to Artistic Excellence Program and Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth.

Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) (2/7/11)

  • STEM Professional Development for K-12 Teachers
  • This program, funded through TN’s Race to the Top award, is designed to encourage partnerships between Universities, local education agencies, and STEM businesses to deliver high-quality, research-based STEM professional development to K-12 STEM teachers to increase pedagogical content knowledge within STEM disciplines.  Eligible focus areas for proposals are as follows:

    Mathematics

    • Elementary School:  Pedagogical content knowledge, focused on building numeracy, clear focus on multiple representations.
    • Middle School:  Programs focused on increasing pedagogical content knowledge with particular emphasis on learning content through pedagogy.
    • High School:  Pedagogical content knowledge in Algebra.

    Science

    • Elementary School:  Enable teachers to implement inquiry-based science focused on the science content and inquiry standards.
    • High School:  Pedagogical content knowledge in Chemistry.
    Up to 10 proposals will be accepted from our institution.  Each proposal must include a collaboration between the College of Arts & Sciences and the School of Education, as evidenced by a Co-PI partnership.  Collaborations with local businesses and other higher education institutions are encouraged.  Requests may not exceed $200,000; the term of the project is from July 2011 to December 2012.  All projects must provide professional development for a minimum of 15 teachers and include teachers from at least two LEAs.

  • Cottrell College Science and Cottrell Scholar Awards
  • Single-investigator Cottrell College Science Awards (preliminary proposal required 9/17, proposal target date 11/15) provide $35,000 ($10,000 match required) for tenure-track individual investigators in their first three years of positions in astronomy, chemistry, or physics departments that do not offer doctoral degrees. Cottrell Scholar Awards (applications due first business day in April) provide $75,000 to tenure-track assistant professors in bachelor- and Ph.D.-granting departments of astronomy, chemistry, and physics.   • OJJDP seeks to conduct a comprehensive process and rigorous impact evaluation of the Second Chance Act Juvenile Mentoring Initiative to determine the effectiveness of combining mentoring with other reentry services for participating juvenile offenders during their confinement, through their transition back to the community, and post-release. OJJDP will select one national evaluator to assess the implementation of these programs and their impact on service delivery and key outcomes for participating youth, including recidivism.
