Can I just see an adviser on my own and not go to orientation?

No. While you can visit with an adviser prior to your session, you will not be able to register for classes at that time. You can register for classes only at an orientation session. Also, remember that orientation provides you and your family with a lot more information than just scheduling classes. That one day session can make a lot of difference and is well worth it.

What is the hold on my account?

Measles Hold/PRIORITY: All students born after 1959 are required to submit documentation of 2 MMR immunizations unless contraindicated by a medical condition, laboratory proven documentation of immunity or contraindicated due to religious beliefs (Since all Tennessee High Schools have required proof of
MMR immunization, graduation from Tennessee high school 1999 or after is considered proof of immunization). Students are also required to provide information regarding immunization against hepatitis B and meningococcal disease. All students will need to fill out the immunization form (pdf) and submit it to the Student Health Center.

Orientation Hold/NORMAL: This simply means that you have not yet attended an orientation session. When you do, the hold will be lifted automatically. If you are a new student and do not to attend orientation, you will be unable to register for classes until August 18th.

Please contact individual offices for any other holds.

Do I have to take placement tests?

UTC administers placement exams in math, English, and foreign language. The scores you earn on these exams will determine the level of college math, English, and foreign language at which you may begin taking classes. Students who have earned college credit in any of these three subjects are not required to take that particular placement exam. Placement scores or appropriate transfer credit must be on file before you will be allowed to register for classes.

English Test Information: The English placement exam will be given at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) on day one of Orientation. Students with an ACT English subscore of 19 or higher (SAT Verbal of 460 or above) are not required to take the test. Students with ACT English subscores of 18 or below (SAT Verbal of 459 and below) must take the test to determine appropriate placement. Students with ACT English subscores of 28 or higher (SAT Verbal of 630 and higher) are not required to take the test but may do so if they want to place into a higher level of English. Students with prior college credit English/composition are not required to take the writing test.

Math Test Information: The math placement test is given at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on day one of Orientation. All students with an ACT math subscore less than 24 are required to take the exam. Students with prior college credit in math that transfers in as one of UTC’s mathematics courses with a grade of C or better are not required to take the placement test. Students who are not required to take the exam may choose to do so in order to place into a higher level of math. To assist you in planning for this test, our Math Department faculty have prepared online practice problems, and we encourage all students especially if it’s been a while since your last math class—to visit the website before taking the test.

Foreign Language Test Information: UTC also offers a foreign language placement exam; however, because foreign language classes aren’t required of all majors, the test also isn’t required. But if you’ve taken three or more years of foreign language in high school and plan to continue that same language in college, you must take the foreign language placement test. Your scores might enable you to test out of one or more introductory language classes. The foreign language placement will be given on day one of Orientation at 10:00 a.m.

Do I need to bring the checkbook for tuition and fees?

No. The tuition and fee schedule for the 2008-2009 year will not be set until July. When the fees are official, the bursar’s office sends out MocsExpress statements (your bill) for all new students who have attended an orientation session and registered for classes. All appropriate fees will be included on the MocsExpress statement. Students will pay for books separately at the UTC Bookstore (usually when picking them up at the beginning of the semester), though you can reserve them while at orientation.

Do my parents have to come to orientation?

UTC Orientation is a family experience! Therefore, we strongly encourage parents, guardians, significant others and/or other family members to attend orientation. So much information is new and sometimes confusing; it really helps to have (at least!) two sets of ears. We would like to welcome your whole family into the UTC community!

TOP

Do I have to stay for the entire session?

Yes, if you leave you will miss something important and you will not be able to register for classes! You’re here to learn about your first year at Chattanooga and to get off on the right foot. It’s in your best interest to be here for all sessions.

TOP

Will I be able to get the classes I need at orientation?

We will do our best to make sure you get the classes you need. We are always able to make sure that students get the classes they need by the first few days of the semester, even if those classes are not available at your specific orientation session. You might need to visit a few professors, an adviser or a department, but you will be able to build a schedule that works for you. Once you start school, you will be in the regular rotation of advising, so you shouldn't’t run into any problems in the future.
