Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities (10/28/09)

Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) program: NCBC is an innovative project that provides adolescents and adults with disabilities an opportunity to read and socialize with friends. The NCBC model actively promotes literacy learning and social connectedness. Each Book Club includes a group of 5-10 individuals with disabilities with a wide range of reading skills. Club members gather with two trained volunteer facilitators in a local bookstore or café to read aloud and discuss a book for one hour per week.

Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Fellowship Program: The Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program provides opportunities to faculty of institutions of higher education (IHEs) to engage in research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies.

ONR Summer Faculty Research Program & Sabbatical Leave Program: Summer Faculty Research Program (ddl 12/4/09) supports science & engineering faculty for 10- weeks, beginning in May. Consists of three levels: Summer Faculty Fellow, Senior Summer Faculty Fellow, and Distinguished Summer Faculty Fellow. Sabbatical Leave Program (apps due 6 months prior to start) provides appointments for a minimum of one semester to a maximum of one year. Participants receive monthly stipend making up the difference between salary & sabbatical leave pay from home institution. Both programs are residential, on site at sponsoring U.S. Navy Laboratory.

Course, Curriculum, & Laboratory Improvement (CCLI): Supports efforts to create, adapt, & disseminate new learning materials & teaching strategies, develop faculty expertise, implement educational innovations, assess learning & evaluate innovations, & conduct research on science, technology, engineering, & math (STEM) teaching & learning. Phase 1 proposals due 5/21/09 for states beginning with A-M and 5/22/09 for states beginning with N-W. Phase 2 and 3 proposals due 1/13/10.

Americorps Program: Supports speaker fees for athletics department drug education and/or wellness programs. Eligibility is limited to active NCAA member institutions or conferences. Preference will be given to those institutions that meet the grant requirements on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of limited funding, applications should be submitted early.Limited submission: one $500 grant per semester. Deadlines are 1/15 & 9/1 annually.

America's Historical and Cultural Organizations Implementation Grants: Supports traveling or long-term museum exhibitions, library-based projects, interpretation of historic places or areas, interpretive web sites, or other project formats that creatively engage audiences in exploring humanities ideas and questions. Applicants should have already done most of the planning for their projects, including the identification of the key humanities themes, relevant scholarship, & program formats. Projects with interdisciplinary perspectives & those that use innovative formats & non-traditional ways of engaging audiences are eligible.

America's Media Makers: Development and Production Grants: Projects must promote active exploration & engagement for broad public audiences in history, literature, archaeology, art history, comparative religion, philosophy, or other humanities. Development grants enable producers/scholars to develop the content & format & to prepare the programs for production; awards last from 6-12 months & range from $40K to $75K. Production grants enable producers & scholars to continue their engagement with humanities topics, & they support the production & postproduction of programs; awards last for 1-3 years & range from $100K to $800K.

Americorps Program: AmeriCorps National grants are designed to address community needs through the assistance of individuals who commit to a term of service of 300 to 1700 hours per year. Several grants offered with slightly differing objectives: State Commission and National Competitive including Professional Corps and Fixed-Amount Grants; State and National EAP; States and Territories without Commissions; and Indian Tribes. IHEs are eligible to apply directly.

Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program: Supports partnerships between 2-year & 4-year colleges/universities to facilitate the transition (R25) of underrepresented minority students into baccalaureate degree programs in natural, physical & behavioral sciences. Projects should focus on the needs of minority students, including: faculty collaborations, research training, seminars, mentoring & counseling. Approximately $12 million is available for six to nine awards per year.Limited submission: one application per institution.

Science Graduate Fellowship program: The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship ( DOE SCGF) program to support outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S.

Undergraduate Research Fellowships: The EPA is making available 30 grants of $46,500 each to enhance and support quality environmental education for undergraduates. The hope is that this assistance will encourage more students to continue their education beyond the baccalaureate level and pursue careers in environmentally related fields.
