Education Specialist in Advanced Educational Practice: Educational Technology
The Education Specialist Degree in Advanced Educational Practice is a post-master's sixth year degree with a focus on education technology. It is designed to generate teachers with high levels of proficiency in the use of technology in school and classroom and other educational settings. Students will be prepared to provide leadership in the field of educational technology.
Students will bring to the program school-based problems and will apply solutions to real problems in schools. Designed for the convenience of the practicing educator, the program of study utilizes distance courses, web-based courses and education programs, the Center of Excellence in Computer Applications, the Walker Teaching Resource Center and the College of Business.
Program Requirements
A minimum of 36 semester hours is required to earn the Ed.S. degree, with a cumulative grades point average of 3.0. This consists of 15 hours in the technology concentration and 6 hours in the leadership core. A Capstone Project with 6 hours in capstone coursework is also required. The student may seek admission to candidacy status by filing a written plan for the Capstone Project which will presented and defended before a three member Candidacy Committee. Students may proceed to candidacy after completing 12 credit hours of coursework.

Two graduate-level courses to be selected from university-wide offerings in consultation with the student's faculty advisor.Additional electives in educational technology will be offered based on student needs. These will be offered as EDUC 503: Current Topics in Education (2-3 hours). Such topics include: Current Issues and Problems in Technology Education, Educational Telecomputing and Networks, Introduction to Instructional Design, Advanced Instructional Design, and Computer Courseware Design.

Application Requirements
A successful applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- Have a GPA of 3.25 or higher on all graduate work
- GRE scores should be submitted for consideration.
- For international students only, a TOEFL score of 500 or higher
- Successful completion of an interview with the Admissions Committee
Eligible applicants should send the following materials to the UTC Graduate Studies office: - A completed UTC graduate application form
- Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended
- A written statement outlining personal and professional reasons for pursuing the Ed.S degree
- A resumé, emphasizing professional experience
- Three letters of reference from professional colleagues and/or supervisors
- Computer Literacy
The ED.S. Admissions Committee will review each application for admission. Recommendations for acceptance into the program will be based upon:
- A review of the applicant's record of graduate coursework for evidence of a superior academic record
- An examination of the supplementary information for evidence of commitment and professional competence in educational settings
- An estimate of probable success in the program
- An assessment of the applicant's potential for curriculum leadership
On the basis of a recommendation for admission by the Ed.S. Admissions Committee, the UTC Dean of Graduate Studies will formally admit the student to the program of study.
