Certificate in Nonprofit Management

The Department of Political Science, Public Administration and Nonprofit Management offers a Certificate in Nonprofit Management through the Master of Public Administration program. The program is aimed at providing nonprofit managers, and those who aspire to management positions in nonprofit agencies in nonprofit agencies advanced academic training in the unique contexts and processes that define the nonprofit community.

Courses Taken in Residence

POLS 543 Nonprofit Management (3 hours)

The purpose of this course is to immerse the student in nonprofit administration. Topics will deal with both the theoretical and the practical side of nonprofit management from the establishment of nonprofit organization through the operations of programs. The primary goal for the course is to increase the knowledge and expertise of students in order for them to feel comfortable in the operation of nonprofit organization.

POLS 535 Community Building (3 hours)

The course focuses on the people and processes involved in building strong communities. Special attention is given to the role of technology in transforming how we build and react to communities and the role of nonprofit organizations in the process.

POLS 536 Government and Nonprofits (3 hours)

The course will focus on the relationship between government and the nonprofit sector. Students will examine government from the perspective of a nonprofit manager as well as nonprofit organizations from the perspective of a public manager.

HSRV 510 Nonprofit Development (3 hours)

The course will examine the development function in nonprofit organizations including grantsmanship, planned giving, special fundraising events, and donor relations.

POLS 538 Nonprofit Marketing (3 hours)

Students develop an understanding of marketing, market research techniques and applications, and the role of marketing in the strategic management of nonprofit agencies and programs.

POLS 539 Strategic Planning in Nonprofit Organizations (3 hours)

Aimed at professional and aspiring nonprofit manages, this course focuses on the skills necessary for conducting a strategic planning process. The course relies heavily on the case studies demonstrating the application of those skills. Other management issues relevant to nonprofit organizations are also examined.

Admission Requirements

Applicants may qualify for admission in one of two ways:

  • Fulfill the following requirements:
    • Hold a bachelor's degree
    • Have significant related experience
    • Demonstrate writing ability by taking the departmentally administered writing proficiency exam.

OR

  • Hold a Master's degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited college or university.

All admissions must be approved by the MPA Faculty Admissions Committee
