Certificate in Internet Application Programming

General Description

The Department of Computer Science offers a Certificate in Internet Application Programming. The program is intended to provide skilled individuals with technical knowledge they can use to enhance their work in industry and government.

Objectives

Provide technical knowledge of :

  • HTML
  • Client-side scripting - Java Script
  • Server-side scripting-Perl, CGI
  • User interface design principles
  • Java and Java toolkits for user interface design
  • Database access techniques - rdo, odbc, dso
  • XML

Integration of this knowledge as demonstrated by completion of required design/implementation project.

Requirements for the Certificate:
11 hours of credit earned in these 4 courses taken at UTC:

CPSC 540 Design of Distributed Systems ...................... 3 credit hours

The design of information systems which provide services using client/server computing over a network. Topics covered include design methodologies, implementation languages and tools, performance evaluation, and security. The network and implementation tools may vary to meet current development trends.

CPSC 541 Design of Web Interfaces ........ 3 credit hours

This course will cover the principles of human interaction with computers, with application to the design of web interfaces. Basic user interface principles, client-side scripting, server-side scripting, Java and Java toolkits.

CPSC 542 Structured Data Exchange ........ 3 credit hours

Survey of XML and the application of XML. Coverage includes the XML document structure, Document Type Definitions, Extensible Stylesheet language, how DTDs and XML schemas can be used to frame data and connect XML documents and the information they access, and data connection objects. The languages and implementation tools may vary to meet current development trends.

CPSC 595r Design Project .... 2 credit hours

A detailed study, design, implementation and report of a real world scenario that will integrate material from the courses required in the certificate programs. May be repeated for credit with approval of the Computer Science Graduate Committee.

Admission Requirements

Knowledge of Object Oriented Programming and Operating Systems is required as demonstrated by the satisfactory completion of CPSC 150, 160, 251, and 312 or equivalent. Individuals will be admitted to the Certificate in Internet Application Programming program if, either:
a. They have a bachelor's degree and significant related professional experience with Object Oriented Programming and are approved by the Computer Science Graduate Coordinator.

OR

b. They meet the admission requirement of the Graduate Division as stated in the Graduate catalog, are admitted to the Computer Science M.S. program, and have satisfied all prerequisite courses assigned by the Computer Science Graduate Coordinator.
