The School of Nursing offers a post-master's (MSN) to Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certification. The program is intended to provide MSN prepared nurses with the course work necessary to take the FNP certification exam.
Courses Taken in Residence
Nurs 504 Advanced Pathophysiology (3 credit hours)
Analysis of complex interrelationships & interdependence of organ systems in health & desease. Selected content relating to pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, gastrointestinal, neurological, immunologic, & endocrine systems is included.
NURS 580 Advanced Pharmacology (3 credit hours)
Essential pharmacotherapeutics for advanced nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on commonly prescribed medications for clients of all ages.
NURS 583 Advanced Health Assessment (2 credit hours)
Advanced health assessment of clients of all ages, including formulation of a clinical diagnosis based upon the health asessment findings.
NURS 584 Advanced Health Assessment Lab (1 credit hour)
Application of advanced health assessment techniques of clients of all ages, including formulation of a clinical diagnosis based upon the health assessment findings.
NURS 551 Health Promotin & Illness Prevention in Primary Care (3 credit hours)
Theoretical foundations in health promotion, illness prevention & maintenance of function across the health-illness continuum with clients: the individual, family, and community.
NURS 552 Primary Care of Children (3 credit hours)
This course provides the student with the knowledge required to promote and maintain the health of children. Sociopolitical, cultural, developmental, & demographic issues related to the care of infants, children, & adolescents are discussed. Psychological, physiological, & pathophysiological concepts of common health care needs of children in various settings are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the diagnosing and management of episodic & chronic health problems of children. Anticipartory guidance & parneting behaviors are also represented.
NURS 553 Primary Care of Children Practicum (2 credit hours)
This course provides the opportunity to apply the concepts presented in Nursing 552 (Primary Care of Children). Learning activities will foster the development of skills in the assessment, diagnosis, & management of the common health needs/problems of children & their families in various settings.
NURS 554 Primary Care of Adults (3 credit hours)
This course provides knowledge required for health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, & management of common & chronic health problems. Current nursing & related research regarding the older adult is incorporated in the course content. Sociopolitical, cultural, developmental, and demographic issues related to the care of adults are discussed. Physiological, psychological, and pathophysiological concepts of common illnesses and health care needs of adults throughout the life span are presented.
NURS 555 Primary Care of Adults Practicum (3 credit hours)
This course provides the opportunity to apply the concepts presented in primary care of adults. Learning activities foster the development of skills in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of the most common acute and chronic illnesses of adults throughout the life span in various primary care settings.
NURS 556 Primary Care of Women (3 credit hours)
This course provides the knowledge required to promote and maintain the health of women. Sociopolitical, cultural, developmental, and demographic issues related to the care of women's health care will be discussed. Psychological, physiological, and pathophysiological concepts of common health care needs of women throughout the lifespan in various settings are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the diagnosing and treatment of episodica and chronic health problems involving the make/female reproductive system.
NURS 557 Primary Care of Women Practicum (3 credit hours)
This course provides the opportunity to apply the concepts presented in Primary Care of Women. Learning activities will foster the development of skills in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of the most common health needs/ problems of women and their significant others throughout the lifespan in various diverse settings.
NURS 559 Family Nurse Practitioner Practicum (8 credit hours)
This clinical course provides the opportunity to integrate and apply theoretical knowledge acquired in previous courses in primary care practice settings. The focus of this course is clinical refinement of previous learned primary health care skills and knowledge. Special emphasis is place on the role of the family nurse practitioner as a member of the health care team with increased responsibilities in the care of individuals and families in various primary care settings.
