General Education Syllabi
In the interest of achieving general education curricular goals and providing students with a clear statement of classroom expectations and performance measures, the UTC faculty resolved in 1996 that syllabi for general education approved courses must adhere to certain basic standards.
At a minimum, all general education course syllabi must provide the following information:
- Course number and title
- Semester offered and, when appropriate, section number
- Instructor's name, office, office hours, office phone, and email address
- Time and days of meeting
- Course description (may be taken from the catalog)
- The statement "This course fulfills a general education requirement in [name of General Education category]"
- Texts for the course -- required texts, plus any supplemental or recommended texts
- Topical outline of the course and/or weekly schedule
- Assignments and specific due dates for when they are due/scheduled, for instance:
- papers (number, length)
- tests/exams
- journal writing
- problems sets
- laboratory work
- web-based assignments (instructor responsible that students have proper instruction in using the technology/software)
- papers (number, length)
- Evaluation procedures and grading policies
- Attendance and other class policies regarding late papers, collaborative work, etc.
- ADA statement
Other types of information that many instructors provide and students find helpful include:
- Statement on background or course prerequisites, course goals, learning expectations, list of questions to be explored in the course.
NB: For General Education assessment purposes, instructors for every general education approved course are required to provide their department administration with copies of course syllabi as well as all principal assessment measures (e.g., tests, exams, quizzes, descriptions of writing assignments) at the conclusion of each semester.
