“Waiting for Godot”
Classical Theatre of Harlem
Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Two tramps meet on the side of the road. The two men remember that they are supposed to wait under a tree for a man named Godot; they do not remember the man very well, but they think he was going to give them an answer to a question that they don’t know. Thus begins one of the plays that revolutionized theatre in the 20th century and influenced generations of succeeding dramatists.

In November 2007, the Classical Theatre of Harlem partnered with renowned visual artist Paul Chan, New York public arts organization Creative Time, the University of New Orleans, Xavier University, Dillard University, The Porch, the Neighborhood Story Project, the Renaissance Project and four local high schools to reach out into the devastated community of New Orleans and to stage free outdoor performances of its acclaimed 2006 post-Katrina production of Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece.

The press was unanimous in its praise. The New York Times called the performances “a daffy, damp, surprisingly effective version ... who knew this play could still surprise?” WBAI Radio called it “a thrilling production… This Godot is deliriously entertaining and profoundly moving, all at once.” Variety said this Godot was “an arresting vision that resonates even after the curtain call … J. Kyle Manzay and Wendell Pierce are a well-oiled vaudeville machine”

And now, as part of its 30th Anniversary season, the Patten Performances brings this classic play from one of America’s most important new theatre companies to the UTC Fine Arts Center. Do not miss this performance
