Founded in 1984 by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women is a dance ensemble that engages a diverse audience by producing bold and life-affirming work based on women's experiences, African American history and cultural influences of the African Diaspora.
Committed to validating the voice of the individual by and facilitating the use of art as a means of encouraging social responsibility and civic engagement, Urban Bush Women has toured throughout the United States and to Asia , Australia , Europe and South America . Festival appearances include Jacob's Pillow, Spoleto USA , National Black Arts Festival, Dance Umbrella UK and at the Lincoln Center . The Company includes among its honors a 1992 New York Dance and Performance Award (“Bessie”), the 1994 Capezio Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, and a 1998 Doris Duke Award for New Work from the American Dance Festival.
Since Urban Bush Women burst on the scene in 1984, the company has made an indelible mark on the dance word by challenging assumptions about body types and styles of movement.
